Slithering Feelings Lesson Activity
Slithering Feelings Guide Teacher • 10-Minute Pacing & Questioning Guide
Slithering Feelings Facilitation
How to turn simple card-matching into a meaningful emotional discovery and communication moment for Year 1.
Why Colors? The Power of the Scaffold
For a Year 1 student, color matching acts as an "anchor of success" (low-stakes entry). The real learning happens when we bridge that color association to their body's state. When they match "Green" to "Calm," they are learning that emotions have levels of physical energy .
0-2m
Step 1: Check Your Scales (Miming)
Point to the Scale of Scales Poster . Say: "Snakes show their feelings in how they wiggle and rest. If you were a snake right now, are your scales coiled up tight (angry red) or lounging on a warm leaf (calm green)?" Have students act out the physical posture of a green snake vs. a red snake.
2-6m
Step 2: Connect the Clues
During the card activity, ask students to look at the snake's eyes and body shape before matching the color.
🗣️ Key Prompt: "This snake is yellow. Why is he wiggling in giant loops? What does his body tell us about how much energy he has?"
6-10m
Step 3: Explaining "What is Wrong"
Explain that we can use the scale colors as a secret code to explain our feelings to adults.
🗣️ Key Prompt: "If you are feeling orange (worried) or red (angry), what is one way a grown-up can help you get back to a calm green?"
Quick Questioning Bank (Ages 5-6)
Focusing on Interoception (Body Clues) "What does your tummy feel like when your scales are Orange? Does it feel wiggly or quiet?"
Focusing on Communication "If your friend's scales are Red today, should we give them space, or should we talk quietly to them?"
Focusing on Regulation "Can we practice taking a slow 'snake breath' (hissing out slowly) to help calm our red scales down?"
Focusing on Empathy "How can we spot when another classmate's scales are feeling a bit shy or quiet (Blue)?"
Explorer Tip: Have the student tape their chosen scale card to their desk as a visual check-in!
