The Power of Warm Welcomes
The first week of school brings a mixture of big feelings—excitement, curiosity, but often a heavy dose of nervousness or separation anxiety. This lesson uses interactive storytelling, rhythm, and somatic breathwork to create a safe container. By teaching students simple verbal scripts and physical movements, you give them concrete tools to regulate when they feel overwhelmed.
1
Anxiety & Safety: The Brave Backpack (15 Mins)
Slides 1 - 3 • Interactive Intro Step-by-Step
Begin with a gentle check-in. Project Slide 2 and guide students to understand that butterflies in the tummy are normal. Use the "Brave Breath" technique to settle the room.
Teacher Script Prompt
"Take a deep breath in through your nose, smelling a beautiful flower... and blow it out slowly like a candle. Let's look around our circle. Some of us feel super excited, and some have tummy butterflies. Both feelings are totally okay! We are safe, we are together, and we are going to have an amazing adventure."
Rhythm Chant: "My Safe Space"
Have students tap their knees in a steady, slow 4-beat rhythm. Teach the chant:
"My feet are here. My heart is brave. I am safe. I am safe."

Belonging & Mindset: We Can Do Hard Things (12 Mins)
Slides 4 - 5 • Growth & Friendship Step-by-Step
Transition to identity and growth mindset. Show Slide 4 and talk about how mistakes help us grow. Guide students to cross their arms over their chests to give themselves a "Heart Hug" as they say: "I can try, even if it's new!"
Teacher Script Prompt
"Look at all these unique stars in our classroom! Every single one of you brings something magical to this room. If a puzzle is hard, or we drop our crayons, what do we say? We don't say 'I can't!' We take a deep breath and tell ourselves: 'I can practice and learn!'"
3
Somatic Calming: The Brave Balloon (13 Mins)
Transition to Slide 6 to lead The Brave Balloon, a visualization and body-awareness exercise designed to release somatic tension and ground children in their seat of safety.
1. THE INFLATION
2. HOLD THE LIGHT
3. COZY RELEASE
Ask students to cup their hands in front of their chest like a small, flat balloon. As they breathe in, they expand their hands outwards to make a big "light-filled balloon".
Pause for 2 seconds. Ask them to imagine this balloon is filled with a bright color (yellow, orange, or green) representing comfort and strength.
With a slow "Ssssss" whisper exhale, bring hands slowly back to the heart, releasing all the nervous energy and letting their body feel loose and warm.
Anxiety De-escalation Strategies (For High Stress)
- The Heart Anchor: Instruct highly anxious students to keep one hand flat on their heart and one on their belly during circle transitions.
- Vocal Regulation: Lower your speaking register and tempo. Speak in slow, warm, melodic phrases to trigger mirror neuron safety.
- Safe Spaces: Identify a quiet corner in the room and label it the "Brave Balloon Corner" where they can repeat the slide visualization anytime.
