Objective
Students will learn the essential components and formatting standards of a professional resume and apply this knowledge by creating their first personal resume draft.
Approach
A mix of direct instruction on professional standards, group analysis of examples, and hands-on application through templated drafting.

Instructional Sequence
10 min Part 1
Introduction: Why a Resume?
- Welcome students and define a resume as a "professional summary" of who they are.
- Discuss the purpose: It’s the first impression a boss or coach has of you.
- Distribute the Resume Example and ask students to look at it briefly.
10 min Part 2
Anatomy of a Resume
- Ask students what sections they see on Jane Doe's resume.
- Define the key sections: Contact Info, Objective, Education, Experience, Skills, Interests.
- Explain that even at age 12-13, they already have valuable "experience" (chores, clubs, sports).
10 min Part 3
The Power of Presentation
- Discuss visual standards: Clean fonts (sans-serif), standard margins, and bullet points.
- Emphasize that a resume should be easy to scan in under 10 seconds.
- Explain the use of action verbs (Assisted, Created, Managed).
20 min Part 4
Hands-On: Drafting
- Distribute the Resume Template worksheet.
- Circulate the room to help students translate their activities into professional language.
- Example: "I watch my little brother" → "Managed childcare and safety for a toddler weekly."
10 min Part 5
Review & Reflections
- Peer Review (5 min): Students swap drafts and check for clarity and spelling.
- Wrap-up (5 min): Recap key sections and collect drafts for feedback.

Anatomy of a Resume
Contact Info

Objective
A 1-2 sentence goal of what you want.
Education
School name and current grade level.
Experience
Work, volunteering, or hobbies.

What you do for fun in your free time.
"But I'm only 12! I have no experience!"
Experience isn't just about a paycheck. It's about responsibility.
Grade 7 Examples:
- Babysitting a sibling or neighbor
- Helping with chores or yard work
- Playing on a sports team (Captain?)
- School clubs or community service
Action Verbs: Level Up Your Resume
Don't say what you "did." Use strong verbs to describe how you performed.
Boring Way:
"I watched my neighbor's cat."
Pro Way:
"Managed daily feeding and health checks for a neighbor's pet."
