Rachel Muddy Jacket Reading Passage The Case of the Muddy Jacket
A story about Rachel and Maya
Rachel skipped down the hallway, excited for recess. Her friend, Maya, had left her brand new, bright yellow rain jacket on a chair near the cubbies. Maya loved that jacket! It had little ducklings on it, and she always talked about how soft it was.
Rachel thought it would be funny to just nudge it with her foot, just a little. But then, as she hurried past, her foot accidentally kicked it harder than she meant to. The jacket slid off the chair and landed right in a small puddle of muddy water that had dripped from someone’s wet umbrella.
“Oops!” Rachel thought, but she was in a hurry. Recess was calling! She ran outside, forgetting all about Maya’s jacket.
Later that day, Maya came to get her jacket. Her eyes grew wide when she saw it. The bright yellow was now splotched with brown mud. A tear welled up in her eye. “My new jacket!” she whispered, her voice trembling. “It’s ruined!”
Rachel saw Maya looking at her jacket and felt a knot in her stomach. She remembered kicking it. She watched Maya try to wipe off the mud, but it just smeared. Maya looked so sad, almost like she was about to cry. Rachel realized that what she thought was a small, silly nudge had actually caused a lot of hurt.
Rachel walked over to Maya. “Maya,” she said softly, “I’m so, so sorry. I accidentally kicked your jacket off the chair, and I didn’t pick it up. I didn’t mean for it to get muddy.”
Maya looked up, surprised. “You did?”
Rachel nodded. “Yes. And I understand why you’re upset. If someone did that to my favorite sweater, I’d be really sad too. It wasn’t right for me to leave it there. Your jacket is important to you.”
Together, they took the jacket to the sink and carefully washed off the mud. It took a while, but eventually, the jacket looked yellow and duckling-covered again. As they worked, Rachel realized how much better it felt to own up to her mistake and try to fix it, rather than just running away.
From that day on, Rachel made sure to always be extra careful with other people’s things. She understood that even small actions can have a big impact, and that showing respect for belongings is a way of showing respect for the person who owns them.
Think About It
• What was Rachel's original "silly" thought?
