Gossip Detectives
Instructional Case File: Tier 1 Social-Emotional Learning
Status
CLASSIFIED
Duration
30 Minutes
Target Squad
5th Grade
Objective
Identify harmful gossip and practice strategies to stop rumors in their tracks.
The "Why"
Gossip can damage relationships and self-esteem like a slow-burning fire. By teaching students to recognize and stop rumors, we build empathy, critical thinking, and a classroom culture built on respect rather than whispers.
Pre-Mission Preparation
Print and cut out Gossip Scenarios Cards .
Print copies of Stop the Rumor Poster Template for small groups.
Arrange desks into small clusters (detective stations).
Prepare chart paper for the "Respect Wall."
Mission Timeline
1
The Briefing (Intro)
5 Minutes
Gather students and open with a mystery: "What spreads without feet and hurts without hands?" (Answer: Rumors/Gossip).
Define Gossip : Unverified talk about others.
Define Rumor : The rapid spread of unconfirmed information.
Objective: We are becoming Gossip Detectives to stop harmful info from spreading.
2
Evidence Analysis
10 Minutes
Distribute Gossip Scenarios Cards to pairs.
Detectives must analyze: Who is being hurt? What is unverified?
Differentiation: Pair struggling readers with "Senior Detectives" (higher-support peers) or provide scaffolded questioning.
3
Operation: Stop the Rumor
10 Minutes
Small groups use the Poster Template to illustrate a strategy.
Strategies to highlight: Ask "Is that true?", Redirect the topic, or Fact-check with the source.
Advanced groups can write a 30-second "Public Service Announcement" script instead of a drawing.
4
Final Report (Reflection)
5 Minutes
Display posters for a 1-minute gallery walk. Ask: "Which strategy felt most powerful?"
Commitment: Each student writes one promise on a sticky note for the "Respect Wall."
Assessment:
Review posters for accurate strategy application and check sticky note commitments for personal relevance.
