Morning Meeting: The Rule Hook
- Interactive Greeting: Roll a coconut across the circle. When caught, they say: "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, look who's in our room! My name is [Name]!"
- The "Why" of Rules: Ask: "What would happen if we all ran into the classroom at the exact same time and threw our backpacks on the floor?" Collect responses. Explain that rules keep us safe and make sure everyone has fun.
9:45 - 10:00 AM
Morning Recess & Playground Rules Practice
Address recent playground troubles directly at the start of recess (9:45 AM) by performing live rule modeling on site.
Playground Action Plan (Three Volunteers Technique)
- Active Slide Demo: Select exactly three student volunteers. Have Volunteer 1 demonstrate walking to the slide, Volunteer 2 show safe sitting position, and Volunteer 3 show slide departure.
- Class Feedback: The rest of the class watches the demonstration and gives a big "thumbs-up" when the safety steps are executed correctly.

Part 1 & 2: Introduction & Predictions (8:50 AM)
Say: "Today we are going to read a super fun book called Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! This book was written by two friends named Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault. They are the authors. That means they wrote all the words!"
Say: "The beautiful, bright pictures were made by Lois Ehlert. She is the illustrator. That means she drew all the pictures we see!"
Say: "Today, we are going to be reading detectives and try a fun trick called predicting! Can you say that big word with me? Pre-dict-ing! Predicting just means making a smart guess about what will happen next in the story."
Part 3: Stopping Point (Page 9)
Read the book out loud up to page 9: "Still more - W! And X Y Z."
Say: "Okay, we're going to pause our reading for a second. Let's look closely at our coconut tree right now. Look at all those letters crowded up at the top. The tree is getting so heavy! What do you think is about to happen next? We are going to pause our book right here, go to our desks when I dismiss you, and draw a picture of our smart guesses!"
Part 4: Teacher Modeling
Say: "Before you go to your desks, watch my smart guess. First, I need to put my name on my paper so everyone knows it belongs to me! Watch me write my name right here at the very top: [Teacher's Name]. Now that my name is on my paper, I can make my prediction. I look at the picture and see the tree looks very heavy. I predict the tree is going to bend all the way down and touch the grass!"
Draw the bent tree trunk leaning way over on the board with leaves touching the grass.
Say: "Now I want to label my picture. I am going to write the word 'bend' right here. Look, B-E-N-D. Those letters say bend!"
Part 5: Table-Work Instructions (9:20 - 9:35 AM)
Say: "All right, go ahead and walk safely to your desks. The very first thing you need to do is write your name at the top of your paper... Remember, there are only two of us teachers, so please be patient... I'm setting a timer. Do not worry if you don't finish your picture! You can totally finish it later today when we have extra time."
10:00 - 10:40 AM: Anchor Chart & Drawing Finish Block
10:00 AM Carpet Gathering: Calm students down right after recess. Complete the collaborative **Good Choices Anchor Chart** together to reinforce playground/class expectations.
10:20 AM Return to Tables: Have students return to their tables to finish coloring and labeling their drawings.
White Basket Clean-Up (10:40 AM): "Freeze! Put your crayons away... When I call your table, stand up, bring your paper over, and drop it inside our white basket so it stays safe."
