High School Accommodations Quick Guide
Scalable, low-prep implementation protocols for solo general education teachers
Part 1: Assessment & Instruction
The Solo Teacher Principle: Shift accommodations from bespoke exceptions to universal classroom infrastructure. When a support is built into everyday class norms, student stigma vanishes and teacher prep drops to zero.
1
Assessment Accommodations (At Scale)
Extended Time (1.5x / 2x) 11 IEPs
Routine: "Split Exam Protocol" — Divide 60-min exams into two 30-min modules (Part A Day 1, Part B Day 2). All students get 45 min per module. Extended-time students naturally finish inside class without tracking after school.
Tests Read Aloud / Audio TTS 10 IEPs
Routine: "Earbud Stations" — Upload test to LMS with built-in voice reader (Read&Write, OrbitNote, Kami, Canvas Quizzes). Any student may plug in wired earbuds. Zero teacher reading fatigue, 100% independent.
Calculator & Formula Cards 10 Total
Routine: "3x5 Index Card Pass" — Provide blank index cards 48h prior. Students handwrite memory formulas/definitions. Tests evaluate conceptual application, rendering individual calculator/card monitoring seamless.
Separate / Reduced Distraction 6 IEPs
Routine: "Perimeter Study Carrels" — Foldable cardboard carrels placed at perimeter desks facing the wall with noise-dampening earmuffs. Frame as "focus zone" open to anyone requesting deep concentration.
Reduce Choices & Segmenting 4 Total
Routine: "Rule of 3 Multiple Choice" — Standardize all class tests to 3 viable distractors instead of 4. Segment pages with bold category dividers. Reduces cognitive visual clutter for the entire room.
Typed Written Responses 4 Total
Routine: "Dual Submission Protocol" — Every essay exam allows paper or LMS submission with spell-check active. Normalizes laptops for extended writing without singling out IEP students.
2
Instructional & Curriculum Supports
Pre-Teaching & Tier 2 Vocab 7 Total
Routine: "Word Wall Kickoff (2 Min)" — Post 3 critical academic words (with 4-word definitions & an icon) at the top of the day's agenda slide. Have students choral-read before opening content.
Graphic Organizers & Outlines 6 IEPs
Routine: "Fill-in Anchor Sheets" — Provide Cornell notes with key headings pre-printed and blank response boxes. Store digital copies in the LMS weekly module for instant access.
Simplified Directions & Steps 5 IEPs
Routine: "Numbered 1-2-3 Rule" — Never write narrative paragraphs for tasks. Use bold verbs and maximum 3 numbered steps. Project on slide: "1. Open doc, 2. Claim sentence, 3. Two citations."
Sentence Starters & Word Banks 3 IEPs
Routine: "Corner Starter Bank" — Print sentence frames on permanent laminated cardstock taped to each desk group (e.g., "The evidence indicates..."). Accessible to all without asking.
Decreased Homework / Problems 2 IEPs
Routine: "Must Do / May Do Highlighting" — Highlight odd-numbered questions in yellow as core mastery ("Must Do"). Full credit given for high-quality completion of highlighted core.
First-Then Project Checklists 2 IEPs
Routine: "Micro-Milestone Slips" — Multi-day projects get a 4-box checklist on day 1. Students must check off Box 1 before starting Box 2. Prevents last-minute panic paralysis.

Classroom & Environmental Accommodations
Chunking Assignments with Timelines 8 IEPs
Routine: "10-2 Pacing Timer" — Display a visual timer (e.g., ClassroomScreen). Direct: "Write thesis by Minute 7. Peer check at Minute 9." Breaks 45-min blocks into bite-sized actionable sprints.
Regular Check-Ins for Completion 7 IEPs
Routine: "The Clipboard Lap" — Carry a class roster clipboard while circulating at Minute 5. Tap desks with a quick whisper: "Got your opening claim? Looks solid." Takes 10 sec per target student.
Preferential Seating 6 IEPs
Routine: "The Side-Runner Zone" — Seat students along side-aisles or front-corners rather than direct center front. Provides direct teacher eye contact without putting student under a class microscope.
Processing & Wait Time (Verbal/Written) 6 IEPs
Routine: "Think-Pair-Share 30" — Enforce: "Nobody speaks for 30 seconds after my question. Write two words first." Prevents impulsive answerers from stealing processing time from peers.
Sensory Tools & Movement 6 Total
Routine: "Standing Workspace Station" — Raise one back counter or podium. Establish ground rule: "Anyone may stand at the back counter during work time as long as pencils are moving."
Prompts to Slow Down / Focus 4 IEPs
Routine: "Desk Tap Signal" — Establish private code in week 1: two taps on desk corner means "Take a breath, check steps 2 & 3." No verbal call-out required.
4
Behavioral, Social & Organizational Systems
Advance Notice of Changes 4 IEPs
Routine: "Permanent Agenda Anchor" — Write 4-part visual agenda on board daily: Bellringer -> Mini-Lesson -> Lab/Work -> Exit. Cross items off with a marker. Never alter sequence unannounced.
Hallway / Transition Passes 2 IEPs
Routine: "Pre-Signed 2-Minute Bell Pass" — Laminate a specific color pass kept inside student binder. Quiet nod at 2 minutes before the bell allows student to exit before crowded hallway rush.
Intentional Peer Pairing 2 IEPs
Routine: "Numbered Partner Cards" — Teacher assigns pairs via playing cards or randomizer app, pre-configured with supportive peers. Eliminates high-anxiety "pick a partner" free-for-alls.
De-escalation & Cooling Passes 2 Total
Routine: "Water Station Circuit" — Agree on silent hand signal (closed fist on chest). Student walks to hallway water fountain for exactly 3 minutes, no verbal justification needed.
Nonverbal Signals & Feedback 2 IEPs
Routine: "Sticky Note Feedback Drop" — Leave a green sticky note with brief compliment on desk: "Great focus on paragraph 2." Provides high-impact positive reinforcement silently.
Redirection When Hyperfocused 1 IEP
Routine: "Bookmark Bookmark Strategy" — Hand student an index card bookmark: "Write down your next thought here so you don't lose it. We switch tasks in 60 seconds."

5
Communication & Participation Accommodations
No Cold-Calling & Gentle Exposure
Routine: "Warm Calling Protocol" — During independent work, whisper to student: "Your answer on #3 is great. I’m going to ask you to read that in 3 minutes." Eliminates panic, builds confidence.
Alternative Participation Channels
Routine: "Mini-Whiteboard Slates / Chat" — Have students hold up dry-erase paddles or submit 1-line answers in LMS chat/Padlet. Gives introverted & anxious students an active voice.
Private / Recorded Presentations
Routine: "Screencast Submissions" — Offer Flip, Loom, or phone voice-memo uploads for presentations. Grade on standard rubric; preserves public speaking objectives without trauma.
Nonverbal Help Signals
Routine: "Red/Yellow/Green Desk Cups" — Inverted paper cup stack on desks. Green = working fine; Yellow = question but working; Red = stuck, need quick check. Scans entire room in 2 sec.
6
Emergency Drills & Safety Accommodations
Advance Notice of Drills
Routine: "The Morning Whispered Heads-Up" — When admin announces a scheduled fire/intruder drill, give target student a quiet 5-min heads-up before bell: "Drill at 10:15. You will walk with me."
Quiet / Reduced-Sensory Evacuation Area
Routine: "Perimeter Line & Ear Defenders" — Keep noise-dampening earmuffs in an accessible pouch near the door. Position student at the back/end of class line outdoors, away from megaphone echoes.

1
Solo General Ed Teacher
Zero paraprofessional or co-teacher presence in the room during class.
Core Insight: Custom, ad-hoc accommodations for 28 individuals fail. We must build universal classroom infrastructure that supports all learners automatically.
Foundational Strategy
The 3 Solo-Teacher Rules
01 • Universal Norms
Make it Ordinary
When calculators, earbud read-alouds, or formula sheets are classwide tools, stigma vanishes and monitoring disappears.
02 • Low-Prep Habit
Protect Teacher Time
Adopt routines requiring zero night-before prep: visual timers, chunked slides, and permanent laminated desk supports.
03 • Discreet Access
Safeguard Dignity
High schoolers often refuse accommodations if it singles them out. Every routine must operate quietly without peer spotlight.
"Fairness is not everyone getting the same thing; it is everyone getting what they need to succeed."
Assessment Accommodations
Extended Time & Read-Aloud at Scale
A Extended Time (1.5x / 2x)
The "Split-Exam Protocol"
Break a 60-min unit test into two 30-min segments across two days (Part A on Thursday, Part B on Friday).
Why it works: All students receive 45 minutes of class time for each part. 1.5x students finish within the bell—zero after-school scheduling.
B Read Aloud & Text-to-Speech
The "Earbud LMS Station"
Deploy assessments on the LMS with embedded text-to-speech (Read&Write, Kami, Canvas reader, or Google TTS).
Why it works: Allow wired earbuds for the entire class. IEP students access speech synthesis privately without teacher voice strain or pulled testing groups.
Covering 21 IEP records: 11 Extended Time + 10 Read Aloud requirements.
