Acorn Harvest Rescue Lesson Plan OT & Fine Motor Protocol Ages 3–6 • Tier 2/3 Intervention
Acorn Harvest Fine Motor Rescue
Therapist Pacing Guide: Pincer Grasps, Midline Crossing & Intrinsic Hand Strength
Session Length: 30–40 Mins
Group Ratio: 1:1 or Small Group (1:3)
Clinical Objectives & Focus Areas
Isolated Pincer Grasp: Facilitate pad-to-pad and tip-to-tip pinch using index and thumb while curling ulnar digits.
Spontaneous Midline Crossing: Position object bin on non-preferred side requiring reach across the body without torso rotation.
Thenar Eminence & Arch Strength: Develop palmar arches via progressive resistance using spring tongs and squeeze-grabbers.
Harvest Station Kit
Sensory Bin: Dried corn kernels, oats, felt leaves.
Harvest Items: 20 acorns (real/wood/felt), small pinecones.
Adaptive Tools: Gator Grabber tweezers, strawberry hullers.
Receptors: Divided egg cartons & colored sorting cups.
Phase 1: "Squirrel Paws" Proprioceptive Warm-Up (6 Mins)
Sensory Prep & Intrinsic Activation
1. Claws to Fist
Rapidly flex digits into a tight bear claw, hold 3 seconds, extend fingers wide into "sunny oak tree." Repeat 5x to prime flexor tendons.
2. Acorn Pinches
Tap thumb pad to each fingertip (index, middle, ring, pinky) making a crisp "O" ring. Reverse sequence. Tap vigorously to tactile beat.
3. Bilateral Rub
Roll a textured acorn back and forth between both palms with vigorous friction to heighten palmar proprioceptive awareness.
Phase 2: The Harvest Rescue Operation (15 Mins)
Grasp Isolation + Midline Challenge
A
Station Ergonomics & Diagonal Reach:
Place sensory bin on student's non-dominant side (e.g., left) and sorting cup/egg carton on dominant side (e.g., right). Therapist prompts child to reach across their belly with their dominant hand, maintaining an upright torso against back of chair.
B
Graduated Resistance Extraction:
Begin with loose surface acorns using index-thumb pads. Advance by tucking acorns beneath sensory filler (corn kernels/felt leaves), requiring child to sustain squeeze against resistance while lifting out of the bin without dropping.

Adaptive Tool Continuum & Clinical Adaptations
Scaffolding fine motor resistance, tool grasp development, and postural control
Phase 3 & Differentiation
Tool Progression Continuum (Least to Most Demanding)
Level / Tool Grasp Mechanics Therapeutic Benefit Clinical Cue Level 1: Palm Tongs / Scooper Whole hand gross grasp with squeeze assist Builds gross grip endurance; minimal finger isolation "Squeeze with your whole paw!" Level 2: Gator Grabber Tweezers Thumb vs. index/middle fingers (radial digits) Promotes radial-ulnar separation; moderate spring tension "Keep sleepy pinky curled under." Level 3: Mini Pincer Tweezers Precision tip-to-tip pinch; open web space Forces isolated intrinsic hand control and arch stability "Make a round doughnut hole with thumb." Level 4: Bare Finger Precision Dynamic tripod / pad-to-pad pincer grasp Direct tactile discrimination, grading release control "Gentle baby pinch, don't drop the acorn."
Mild Support (Tier 1)
Students with emerging tripod grasp but fatiguing quickly.
Place cotton ball or small pom-pom in ring/pinky fingers to hold against palm.
Use larger wooden acorns with defined rim for easier purchase.
Moderate Support (Tier 2)
Students who rotate trunk instead of crossing midline.
Anchor non-dominant hand flat on desk ("Glue helper paw to the table").
Angle student slightly away from bin to exaggerate reach across midline.
Intensive Support (Tier 3)
Significant weakness, hypertonicity, or sensory aversion.
Use low-resistance loop tongs or silicone scoopers.
Substitute dried corn with smooth felt acorns if tactile sensitivity is observed.
Phase 4: Heavy Work Cool-Down & Reset (5 Mins)
Conclude with proprioceptive input to regulate the sensory motor system after intense fine-motor concentration:
1. "Acorn Nutcracker" Palms: Place wooden acorn between prayer-positioned palms. Squeeze together firmly for 5 seconds, breathing out slowly. Repeat 3 times.
2. "Fallen Leaf" Chair Push-Ups: Have child place palms flat on seat edge and push bottom off chair 5 times to deliver deep joint compression to wrists and shoulders.
Therapist Observation Prompts (Rubric Alignment)
Pincer Pattern Pad-to-pad vs. fisted rake
Midline Reach Crosses line without trunk shift
Endurance Maintains grasp >10 transfers
Helper Hand Stabilizes container actively

The Worker Fingers
Thumb and Pointer are the strong rescue team! They press the sides of the tweezers together to bite the acorn.
Therapist Cue:
"Make a round open mouth! Chomp down gently!"

The Sleepy Fingers
Ring finger and pinky finger stay tucked inside your palm! They are sleeping quietly so the worker fingers can squeeze.

Skill Domain Level 1: Emerging (1 pt) Level 2: Developing (2 pts) Level 3: Proficient (3 pts) Level 4: Mastered (4 pts) Pincer Grasp Maturation Thumb-index isolation & webspace Uses whole-hand fisted palmar grasp; rakes items into palm. Static 4-finger grasp; thumb flat against side of index with closed webspace. Immature pad-to-pad pinch; occasionally collapses thumb webspace. Dynamic tip/pad pinch with open, circular webspace; ulnar digits curled. Midline Crossing & Trunk Reach across sagittal plane Switches hand to avoid crossing midline; shifts hips or entire torso. Reaches to midline with moderate trunk rotation; struggles to cross beyond 2 inches. Crosses midline smoothly with verbal cue; slight shoulder elevation noted. Effortless diagonal reach across body; stable upright trunk with zero compensations. Tool Grip Strength Spring compression & sustain Requires bilateral hands or therapist assist to compress tongs. Compresses adaptive tweezers 1–2 times; drops item mid-transfer due to rapid fatigue. Transfers 5–8 items before fatiguing; mild wrist hyperextension noted. Maintains sustained graded tension for 10+ items without dropping or hand strain. Bilateral Stabilization Helper hand anchor function Non-dominant hand inactive, hanging limp in lap, or in mouth. Passive placement on table; fails to hold container when disturbed. Actively holds mat/cup with prompt; occasional release during high focus. Spontaneously braces sorting hollows; fluid cooperative bilateral synchronization. Sensory & Release Control Tactile modulation & drop Aversive to sensory filler; fling-releases items abruptly outside hollow. Tolerates bin with hesitation; releases prematurely >3 inches above target. Freely digs in filler; controlled release into wide cup with minor misses. Explores varied textures enthusiastically; precise, graded placement into small target circles.
