"Hey! Today we're learning the secret to catching classroom directions on the first try. Everyone has moments where the teacher gives three steps and your brain only catches the last one. We're going to build your radar so directions feel easy."
Coach the 4-Point Listening Radar
1. Eyes Locked
Track teacher or speaker. Looking down drops listening comprehension by half.
2. Hands Parked
Pencils and items placed flat on desk until the green light is given.
3. Mental Echo
Silently whisper key words inside brain (e.g., "Page 24, evens only").
4. Ready Nod
Give a quick nod to show the teacher you're locked in and ready.
Mentor Read-Aloud Challenges Read once clearly
Challenge 1 (2 Steps):
"Open your math workbook to page 32, and put your finger on problem number 4."
Check: Did they wait before grabbing the book? Did they catch both page and problem?
Challenge 2 (3 Steps):
"Cap your markers, put your worksheet in the blue bin, and fold your hands on your desk."

Remove everything from desk except pencil and today's worksheet.
B. The Micro-Step
Write name, date, and complete Question #1 only. Momentum follows.
C. Sprint Timer
Work uninterrupted for 7 full minutes before looking at clock.

Scenario 1: Whispering Neighbor External
Mentor says: "Hey, did you see what happened at recess?"
Winning Shield: "Hold on, let me knock out these 2 questions first—talk at lunch."
Scenario 2: The Boredom Stare Internal
Mentee stares at ceiling or twirls pencil without writing.
