This unit is structured for parallel learning: supporting a 3rd-grade general learner with grade-level science and reading comprehension, while providing a 7th-grade nonverbal student with clean, high-contrast, Boardmaker-style Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and color-coded interactive prompts. Use the printable communication board on page 2 to facilitate pointing and selection.
4-Day Pacing & Objectives
Day 1: What is a Habitat?
Introduce "habitat" (home/safety) and "ocean" (big salt water). Students match words using teal & blue visual color cues.
Day 2: Sunlit Zone
Shallow water (0-200m). Coral reef and sea turtles. Differentiate with Yes/No question checks using check (YES) / cross (NO).
Day 3: Twilight Zone
Dim water (200-1000m). Glowing jellyfish. Direct nonverbal student to cut/paste symbol cards into sentence frames.
Day 4: Midnight Zone
Dark water (1000-4000m). Bioluminescent anglerfish. Match zones and animals to review the entire vertical habitat.
Special Education Facilitation
Prompt Hierarchy: Start with an independent point. If no response, use a gestural prompt (pointing near the target), then a visual model, and finally a hand-under-hand guidance if needed for physical matching.

Ocean Homes: From Top to Bottom
A habitat is a plant or animal's natural home. The ocean has many different habitats! At the top is the sandy beach and shoreline, where land meets the water. Here, crabs scurry across the warm sand and birds hunt for food.
Just below the shoreline is the Sunlit Zone. This bright, warm layer gets plenty of sunlight. It is home to colorful coral reefs, swimming sea turtles, and active dolphins. As you go deeper, the ocean changes. The Twilight Zone is the dim and cool middle layer. Only a small amount of light reaches this zone, where delicate jellyfish drift silently through the blue shadows.
