DNA: The Code of Life
A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Concept Map
Fill in each node as we explore the blueprint inside you
Unit: Genetics
Concept Map Center
What is DNA?
Hub Node
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
The master instruction manual that codes for all living things.
Contains the complete recipe for building and running your body.
Passed down from biological parents to their offspring.
Analogy: The Ultimate Cookbook
If your body is a finished dish, DNA is the molecular cookbook with all the recipes!
Map Action: Locate the dark blue center bubble labeled DNA.
Branch 1
Where is DNA Found?
Cellular Location
Primary Location
The Nucleus
In eukaryotic cells (plants, animals, fungi), DNA never leaves the cell nucleus. The nucleus acts as a protective vault.
Packaging
Chromosomes
Over 6 feet of DNA is packed inside every human cell! To fit, it winds tightly into X-shaped bundles called chromosomes.
Map Action: Fill in Nucleus and Chromosomes in Box 1 (top left).
Branch 3A
The 3D Structure: Double Helix
Molecular Shape
Double Helix = "Twisted Ladder"
"Double" means two strands winding around each other. "Helix" means a spiral.
Discovered using X-ray photography by scientist Rosalind Franklin in 1952.
James Watson and Francis Crick built the first accurate physical 3D model in 1953.
Picture a Spiral Staircase
The handrails curve around the outside, while the steps connect across the middle.
Map Action: Fill in Double Helix under 3D Shape (bottom left).
Branch 3B
The Sides of the Ladder: The Backbone
Structural Support
P
Phosphate Group
Provides strong chemical bonds linking each unit together into an unbreakable structural chain.
S
Deoxyribose Sugar
A special 5-carbon ring sugar that gives DNA the first part of its name: Deoxyribo...
Alternating Pattern:
Phosphate Sugar Phosphate Sugar
Map Action: Fill in Phosphate and Deoxyribose Sugar under Backbone.
Branch 4A
The Subunit: The Nucleotide
Building Block
Just like a brick wall is made of single bricks, DNA is made of repeating units called nucleotides.
1
Phosphate
One round phosphate connector group.
2
Sugar
One deoxyribose 5-sided sugar ring.
3
Nitrogen Base
One of four chemical letters (A, T, C, or G).
Map Action: Fill in Nucleotide in Box 4 (bottom right).
Branch 4B
The Rungs: 4 Nitrogen Bases
Base-Pairing Rules
A — T Pair Memory Trick: Apples in Trees
Adenine (A) pairs ONLY with Thymine (T)
Connected by 2 hydrogen bonds in the middle.
C — G Pair Memory Trick: Cars in Garages
Cytosine (C) pairs ONLY with Guanine (G)
Connected by 3 hydrogen bonds in the middle.
The order of these 4 letters forms the entire genetic code!
A = T | C ≡ G
Map Action: Write Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine in Box 4.
Branch 2
Biological Purpose: Genes & Traits
Function
Functional Unit
Genes
A gene is a specific section of DNA that holds the instructions to make a specific protein.
The Outcome
Traits
Those proteins determine your physical and functional traits—like eye color, hair texture, and blood type!
Map Action: Fill in Genes and Traits in Box 2 (top right).
Challenge
Concept Map Wrap-Up & Challenge
Practice
Bottom Section: Complementary Base Pairing
If one side of the DNA strand reads:
ATCGTAGC
What letters pair on the other strand? T - A - G - C - A - T - C - G
All terms from the Word Bank should now be placed on your map!

Complementary Base Pairing Solution
All Correct Keys
Given Strand:
ATCGTAGC
Key Answer:
TAGCATCG
Common Misconception: Students often confuse Nucleotides (the monomer subunit) with Nitrogen Bases (the 4 specific chemical rungs). Remind them that a nucleotide contains three components.
