Operation Jumpstart Lesson Plan 1-on-1 Classroom Executive Functioning
Operation Jumpstart Lesson Plan
Grades 3–5 • 30 Minutes
Focus: Independent Classroom Seatwork Initiation
Core Goal
Empower student to independently start writing assignments, math word problems, and comprehension tasks in under 60 seconds.
Materials
Slides, Starter Steps Worksheet, Classroom Task Bank Handout, Mission Launchpad Activity, pencil, timer.
Target Skill
Overcoming desk-freeze during whole-group to independent transitions using micro-moves, desk runway setups, and 5-4-3-2-1 ignition.
Classroom Reality: The Independent Work Transition Trap
When the teacher announces, "Turn to page 42 and answer questions 1–6 on your own," students with initiation deficits experience cognitive overload. They sharpen pencils, look for erasers, or daydream to avoid the discomfort of starting. Frame this coaching as learning "pit-stop speed."
Step-by-Step 30-Minute Facilitation Guide
1
Warm-Up: The Classroom Desk Freeze (0:00 – 0:05)
5 Mins
Objective: De-stigmatize the freeze response when independent seatwork begins in class.
Say verbatim: "Imagine your teacher says: 'You have 15 minutes of quiet seatwork on math word problems—go!' You look around, everyone seems to start scratching their pencils, but your hand feels frozen to the desk. You want to start, but your brain hit pause. That's called Task Freeze, and today we're building your classroom launch switch."
Diagnostic Probe: Ask: "Which classroom task freezes you most often: writing paragraphs, reading comprehension questions, or math word problems?" Note their response.
2
Interactive Concept: 3 Start-Stealers & Classroom Launch Tools (0:05 – 0:12)
7 Mins
Objective: Connect the 3 Start-Stealers to specific classroom tasks and teach the 3 launch weapons.
Tool 1: The Micro-Step
Never try to do the assignment all at once. Shrink the start to a 10-second physical move (e.g., circling the question number).
Tool 2: Clear the Desk Runway
Slide everything inside the desk except the 1 assignment sheet and 1 sharpened pencil. Clutter creates cognitive drag.
Tool 3: 5-Second Ignition
Quiet countdown: 5-4-3-2-1. On '1', touch pencil lead to paper. Bypasses overthinking and launches motor action.

Supported Task: Starter Steps Dissection (0:12 – 0:20)
8 Mins
Have student open their Starter Steps Worksheet . Direct them to circle their grade level (3, 4, or 5) and follow the turnkey tasks below.
Turnkey Task Prompts by Grade (Use Directly in Session)
Grade 3 Task Suite:
Writing: "Secret treehouse door in classroom closet: What is inside & 1 visitor rule?"
Math Word Problem: "Marcus brought 4 packs of 6 juice boxes. 15 kids drank 1, teacher drank 2. Left over?"
Reading Comprehension: "Sea otters wrap in giant kelp ribbons and hold paws. How do they stay safe while sleeping?"
Grade 4 Task Suite:

Culminating Challenge: Launchpad Protocols & 2-Min Sprint (0:20 – 0:27)
7 Mins
Student picks their hardest task from their grade suite (Writing, Math, or Reading), completes their Launchpad Card, counts down 5-4-3-2-1 with you, and completes a live 120-second sprint!
Part 5: Debrief & Desk Badge (0:27 – 0:30): Notice friction drop on post-flight rating. Sign student's Task Commander Desk Badge.

Mission Briefing 01 The Classroom Start Puzzle
"Class, open your folders and begin!"
Everyone starts writing. But you're staring at the blank page, clicking your pencil, or looking around the room.
You are NOT stuck on purpose
Your brain is just caught in a start-friction jam.
It IS completely hackable
All you need is a launch protocol for your desk!
Secret: Once your pencil writes for 60 seconds, your brain enters flow mode!
Target Recognition Classroom Villains
The 3 Classroom Start-Stealers
Which villain attacks you most often during independent seatwork?
The Mountain
"Writing a full story will take forever!"
Common in: Writing Prompts
The Fog
"These word problems look so confusing!"
Common in: Math Multi-Step
The Snooze
"Reading 4 pages to answer questions feels so dry."
Common in: Comprehension
Now let's arm you with the 3 classroom launch tools!
Classroom Weapon 01 The Micro-Step
Shrink the First Classroom Move
Never try to do the whole page at once. Do a 10-second micro-move!
✕ Too Big (Desk Freeze)
"Write the entire 5-sentence essay response."
"Solve all 8 multi-step word problems."
Brain panics and shuts down
✓ 10-Second Micro-Move
"Write name, date, and circle the prompt word."
"Read sentence 1 and circle the first number."
Zero friction! The pencil is moving!
Rule: Make the first step so tiny you couldn't say no even if you tried!
Classroom Weapon 02 Desk Runway Setup
Clear Your Desk Runway
Cluttered desks create a cluttered brain. Set up your flight deck!
1. One-Sheet Rule
Slide extra books, rulers, and pencil cases inside your desk. Only keep out your 1 sheet!
Cuts desk clutter
2. Focus Stance
Angle your chair straight toward your paper. Don't look around at what neighbors are doing!
Blocks peer distractions
