2. Proactive Environmental & Pre-Correction Supports

Desk Anchor Card
Tape "First / Then" board to student's upper right desk corner at all times.
Transition Buddy

3. The Standard 3-Step Transition Protocol
Universal script for all staff

Teacher flashes visual cue card (e.g., "Carpet Spots"). Student taps their personal desk card to verify destination.
3

Transition Mastery Teacher Guide
Target: Early Elementary (K-2)
1. The 60-Second Morning Setup
Step A • Clear the Board
Wipe previous day's chart. Ensure 5 blank star slots are ready and visual cue cards are in desk pouch.
Step B • Reward Selection
Have the student select their goal badge (e.g., Line Leader) before the morning bell rings.
Step C • Pre-Correction High-5
Whisper prompt: "Remember: Hear the chime, check your card, earn your first star at morning circle!"
2. Verbatim Teacher Scripts
2-Minute Warning Script Auditory + Visual
"Class, 2 minutes left. [Student Name], look at your timer card. 2 minutes until our books are put away for carpet."
Point to the 2-minute countdown card on desk. Avoid extra chatter.
Transition Cue Script Chime + 3 Words
"[Chime tone sounds twice]. Stop, look, move. [Student Name], check your card: Carpet spot in 10, 9, 8..."
Pair with visual card held up at chest level. Do not repeat instructions.
Immediate Praise Script Within 5 Seconds
"Awesome job freezing right away and walking safely to your spot! You earned your Star 2. Place it on your chart!"
Hand the star token immediately. Praise must be behavior-specific.
Neutral Redirection Script Calm & Low-Tone
"[Silent tap on visual card]. First carpet spot, then star. You have 5 seconds to earn it with walking feet."
Maintain neutral facial expression. Avoid emotional lectures.
3. Reinforcement Principles & Praise Ratio
The 10-Second Rule
Delayed tokens lose 70% of motivational value for young learners. Deliver the star before beginning the next lesson.
4:1 Positive Ratio
Ensure at least 4 positive acknowledgments (nod, smile, thumbs up) for every 1 corrective prompt throughout the day.
Never Take Stars Back
Tokens earned are permanent. If an afternoon transition fails, withhold the new star, but never deduct previously earned stars.

4. Fast Troubleshooting Algorithms
Scenario A: Ignores Chime & Clings to Toy
Action: Kneel at eye level. Present the "First / Then" card directly in front of the student. Offer a choice of transition helper role: Do not physically pry the toy.
