Islam: Faith & History
Islam is a monotheistic religion, which means Muslims believe in only one God, called Allah. The religion began over 1,400 years ago in the city of Mecca, located in Saudi Arabia. Today, it is the second-largest religion in the world, followed by about 1.8 billion people.
The prophet Muhammad founded Islam. Muslims believe he received the word of Allah from the angel Jibreel. These teachings were written down in a sacred book called the Qur'an, which has 114 chapters. Muslims also look at the Hadith to learn about Muhammad's sayings and actions. Muhammad is so respected that Muslims often say "peace be upon him" after his name.
There are five essential teachings called the Five Pillars of Islam. These include faith (Shahadah), prayer (Salah), charity (Zakah), fasting (Sawm), and a pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj). Muslims worship in a building called a mosque. On Fridays at noon, the most important weekly service is held, led by a leader called an imam.
