Fabric to Fold: Facilitator Guide
Garment Care Systems, Chemical Safety, and Independent Living Task Workflows
MODULE: DOM-204
PACING: 90–120 MIN
Target Audience
Adults 18–22+ Transition
Setting
Life Skills Lab / Laundry Room
Core Standard
Career & Community Living IL.4
Skill Modality
Task Analysis & Kinesthetic
Core Measurable Objectives
1. Categorical Sorting Students will sort a 12-item mixed laundry basket into 3 distinct piles (Whites/Lights, Darks/Colors, Delicates/Towels) with ≥90% accuracy.
2. Chemical & Cycle Selection Students will select the correct detergent dose (Line 1/2/3) and washer cycle settings without under- or over-filling chemical dispensers.
3. Fire & Moisture Safety Students will locate, inspect, and clear the dryer lint screen before and after operation, explaining the specific fire risk if neglected.
4. Ergonomic Precision Folding Students will execute standard 3-step fold routines for t-shirts, bath towels, and trousers to enable compact drawer/shelf storage.
Equipment & Realia Checklist
Station A: Sorting • 3 Color-coded laundry bins
• 15 Mixed sample garments
• Magnified care tag cards
Station B: Dispensing • Liquid & powder detergents
• Graduated dose cups (taped lines)
• Unit-dose pods (dummy/water)
Station C: Finishing • Flat folding table (36" height)
• Cardboard folding jig (optional)
• Stackable organizer bins
Instructional Delivery: Sequence 1 & 2
Phase 1: The Sorting Matrix & Care Tag Clues (25 Mins) Direct Instruction + Guided Practice
Demonstrate the "Three-Bin Rule" (Whites & Undergarments, Dark Everyday, Heavy/Linens). Show students how dye bleeding ruins light garments. Introduce tactile discrimination (heavy denim vs. sheer synthetic). Model reading the universal care icons (Washtub = Wash, Triangle = Bleach, Square = Dry, Iron = Iron).
Phase 2: Detergent Chemistry & Machine Dial Decoding (25 Mins) Hands-on Dosing Lab
Address the common myth that "more soap = cleaner clothes." Teach measurement ring lines: Line 1 (Small load / 1/3 drum), Line 2 (Medium load / 1/2 drum), Line 3 (Heavy soiled / full drum). Review High Efficiency (HE) versus standard dispensers. Practice setting water temperature (Cold for colors/shrinkables; Warm/Hot for whites/bedding).

Delivery Workflow, Safety Protocols & Accommodations
Phases 3 to 5, Universal Design Modifications, and Transition Assessment
PAGES 3–5 PROTOCOLS
Instructional Delivery: Sequence 3, 4 & 5
Phase 3: The Dryer Circuit & Lint Safety Audit (20 Mins) Safety Drill
Every student completes the "Two-Finger Lint Screen Sweep." Explain how trapped lint restricts airflow, overheats heating coils, and ignites residential fires. Contrast tumble drying (Cotton, Towels) with flat/hang drying (Knits, Spandex, Wool).
Phase 4: Ergonomic Folding Masterclass (25 Mins) Motor Task Practice
Teach uniform edge alignment: (1) Body fold, (2) Sleeve tuck, (3) Hem-to-collar fold. Introduce vertical "file folding" so garments stand upright in drawers without collapsing. Pair students for reciprocal peer coaching.
Phase 5: Functional Simulation & Verification (15 Mins) Performance Check
Provide student pairs with unscripted laundry dilemmas (e.g., muddy athletic shorts mixed with white undershirts; wool sweater with grease spot). Assess sorting, chemical measurement, and fold stability.
Non-Negotiable Safety & Chemical Hazards
Never Mix Bleach & Ammonia: Creates toxic chloramine gas. Direct instruction: Only use oxygen bleach (color-safe) or chlorine bleach alone in the dedicated bleach dispenser.
Unit-Dose Pod Handling: Always handle with bone-dry hands. Never bite, pierce, or submerge pods. Store out of reach of younger siblings or pets.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Accommodations
Physical / Motor Use a rigid folding board (flip-fold jig) to eliminate complex fine motor bilateral coordination.
Visual / Cognitive Affix color-coded neon tape rings around detergent caps matching load sizes (Green = Line 1, Blue = Line 2).
Executive Function Provide laminated step-by-step pictorial checklist mounted directly over washer with velcro tally marks.
IEP Functional Independence Goal Prompt IEP DATA METRIC
"By [Date], given a basket of 10 mixed dirty garments, [Student] will independently sort by color, measure detergent to appropriate fill line, select machine settings, and fold garments using a 4-step task sequence with no more than 1 indirect verbal prompt across 4 consecutive trials."

Fabric to Fold: Garment Care & Laundry Systems
Master textile sorting, detergent measurement, cycle selection, and neat folding for complete household independence.
Sort by Color & Fabric
Accurate Chemical Dosing
Dryer Safety & Clean Fold
Phase 1: The Sorting Foundation
The Three-Bin Sorting Rule
1
Whites & Pastels
White t-shirts, light socks, pale undershirts, and light linens.
Rule: Never mix with darks to prevent dull gray tinting!
2
Darks & Colors
Jeans, black hoodies, navy trousers, red and saturated colored shirts.
Rule: Wash in cold water to stop dye transfer and fading.
3
Towels & Bedding
Thick bath towels, washcloths, bedsheets, and heavy cleaning cloths.
Rule: Wash separately; heavy terry cloth sheds lint onto shirts.
Pro Tip: Check all pockets for coins, tissues, and pens before loading! STEP 1 COMPLETE
