Instructional Intent & Barrier Removal
This lesson targets visual discrimination and foundational choice-making (Yellow vs. Blue) without requiring pencil grasp, written output, letter recognition, or verbal speech. The educator provides structured wait time and adapts response tools based on the student's physical and communicative access method.
Response Options Menu (Select What Fits Best)
Option A: Eye-Gaze Window Low Tech
Hold an eye-gaze clear frame or 2 cards 18 inches apart at eye level. Watch student's pupil fixate for 2-3 seconds on the target color.
Best for: low fine-motor control, fatigue, or hand tremors.
Option B: Gross-Motor Touch / Slap Direct Touch
Place two large 4" laminated cards on a non-slip slant board or mat. Accept whole-fist press, open palm swat, or hand rest.
Best for: students with emerging reaching and gross arm movement.
Option C: Tactile Drop / Object Drop Sensory / 3D
Provide two large open bins (one yellow bin, one blue bin). Student releases a sensory object (soft beanbag or textured ball) into the matching bin.
Best for: grasp/release exploration without precise pointing.
Option D: Partner-Assisted Scanning Assisted AAC
Educator points to Left ("Is it Yellow?"), pauses 5s for head nod, vocalization, or smile. If no response, moves to Right ("Is it Blue?").
Best for: students developing intentional yes/no confirmation signals.
Fine-Motor & Physical Setup Strategies
• High Contrast Backgrounds: Place materials against black or neutral felt mats to reduce visual clutter and enhance color boundaries.
• Slant Board & Non-Skid Dycem: Elevate the activity surface at 20-30 degrees to minimize neck strain and secure mats so they don't slide during gross swiping.
• Tactile Borders: Apply hot-glue ridges, puffy fabric paint, or foam tape along card borders so the student can feel when their hand reaches the target area.
• Velcro Grab Tabs: Mount foam sponge spacers or plastic milk-cap rings under activity tokens to make lifting effortless without a pincer grasp.

Facilitator Protocol
Step-by-Step Lesson Script
| Time | Phase | Educator Prompt & Student Action |
|---|
| 0-4 min | 1. Sensory Hook & Yellow Explore | Show yellow sensory item (warm felt/sponge). Say: "Look, Yellow! So bright!" Encourage student to touch or gaze. Touch Yellow on Communication Board. |
| 4-8 min | 2. Tactile Blue Introduce | Introduce blue textured ribbon/ball. Say: "Here is Blue! Cool Blue!" Student holds, feels, or fixates. Model touching Blue on the Communication Board. |
| 8-15 min | 3. Guided Discrimination & Matching | Place Yellow mat on Left, Blue mat on Right. Present Yellow token: "Where does it go? Show me Yellow." Allow 5-7 seconds wait time. Acknowledge any gaze, reach, or swat! |
| 15-18 min | 4. Functional Choice Confirmation | Offer celebratory sensory item: "Do you want more Yellow or Blue?" Validate selection immediately: "You looked at Blue! Here is Blue!" |
| 18-20 min | 5. Transition & Closure | Point to "All Done" symbol on the communication mat together: "Great job exploring! We are All Done!" |
Prompt Hierarchy (Use Least-to-Most)
1. Natural Cue (Wait 5-7s) → 2. Visual/Gestural Point → 3. Verbal Cue ("Look Left") → 4. Hand-Under-Hand

Key Facilitation Reminder:
Honor every intentional communicative attempt (body orienting, vocal sigh, sustained gaze). If fatigue appears, switch from direct reaching to eye-gaze or partner-assisted scanning.
