The Hook: The Subjectivity Trap
Setup: Show a short video (2-3 minutes) of a student exhibiting escalating behavior (e.g., searching "escalation cycle video" or using a staged classroom roleplay). Do NOT give any context.
Action: Ask students to write down 3 words to describe what they saw. Most will write words like "angry," "unhappy," or "unruly."
The Twist: Collect the words. Point out that "angry" looks different to everyone. Does it mean hitting? Or just a quiet scowl? Explain that in clinical settings, "angry" doesn't help a team decide what to do next. Data needs precision .

When recording antecedents, be extremely specific . Instead of writing "Math class," write "Presented with a double-digit multiplication worksheet." Instead of "Peer conflict," write "Student A told the student his shirt was ugly." Specificity allows us to find the exact trigger to address.

Before starting the timer, the whole class must agree on the definition. If the target is "Um," does "Uh" count? If the target is "Pacing," how many steps constitute one 'instance'?
