Color Coding: Allow students to use a blue highlighter for vowels and a black pen for consonants.

Linguistic Phonics Reference
Speech-to-Print Philosophy
Traditional phonics teaches students how to turn letters into sounds (Decoding). Linguistic Phonics flips the script: it teaches students how to turn the sounds they speak into written code (Encoding).
"We don't teach letters that 'make' sounds. We teach that sounds are 'represented by' letter symbols."

Start with the mouth, end with the hand.
Architectural Terms
Phoneme (Sound)
The smallest unit of sound in a word. English has 44 phonemes. Architects think of these as the raw materials.
Grapheme (Symbol)
The letter or group of letters used to write a phoneme. These are the blueprint symbols.
Mapping
Connecting one sound to its symbol. Crucial for SLD: one box per sound, regardless of how many letters (e.g., "SH-EE-P" is 3 boxes).
Chaining
Changing one sound at a time to build a new word (e.g., cat -> mat -> sat). This builds extreme phonemic flexibility.

High-Impact SLD Strategies
● Avoid "Clutter": Use simple, clean fonts and plenty of white space. SLD students are easily overwhelmed by visual noise.
● No "Rules": Instead of "When two vowels go walking...", just say "These two letters work together to build one sound."
● Nonsense Words: Use them frequently! They prevent students from relying on visual memory and force them to use the code.
● Error Correction: Never just give the answer. Say "You wrote /a/, but the word has /o/. Which symbol needs to change?"

For each sentence: 1. Read the full sentence. 2. Have the student repeat it. 3. Dictate word-by-word if needed, prompting the student to tap the sounds for target words before writing.

Adding a silent E at the end of a word changes the short vowel into a long vowel. The E is silent, but it has the power to make the first vowel say its name!

Grading Guidance for SLD
Count the target vowel pattern primarily. If the surrounding consonants are incorrect but the vowel pattern is correct, consider half-credit.
Look for reversals (e.g., b/d) and mark them as minor errors if the phonics logic is sound.
Note any consistent patterns of error (e.g., substituting /ar/ for /or/) for future remediation blueprints.
