Vocab Mapping Slides Lesson 1: Planning
Vocab Mapping Challenge
Mastering your device starts with knowing your map. Let's find the words that get the job done.
What Went Wrong?
"A customer asks where the restroom is. You spend 2 minutes looking for the 'Building' folder. The customer walks away frustrated."
The Impact of Speed:
Fast navigation = Professionalism
Slow navigation = Missed connections
Mapping = Confidence
Two Types of Workplace Words
Core Vocabulary
The "glue" words used in every job.
Help Where Finished More Please
Fringe Vocabulary
The "specific" words for a unique role.

Lesson 1: Workplace Vocabulary Setup
11th Grade | Special Education | AAC
Objective
Students will identify 5 essential workplace words/phrases for a specific job role and document the multi-step navigation path required to access them on their AAC device.
Key Concepts
Motor Planning: Building automaticity through repetition.
Folder Hierarchy: Understanding how fringe vocabulary is nested.
Latency: Reducing the time between a question and a response.

FACILITATION STEPS
01
The Hook (10 mins)
Use the slides to present a "Workplace Misunderstanding" scenario. Ask: "What happened when the device user couldn't find the word?" Focus on the social and professional impact of speed.
02
Role Selection (5 mins)
Allow students to select a role. If a student has a specific work-study placement, use their actual job. Provide job descriptions for the stock roles (Grocery, Office, Barista) to spark ideas.
03
The Mapping Mission (20 mins)
Students use their devices to find specific words. Assist students in writing down the sequence.
Example: Actions -> Work -> Specific Job -> [Word]
Differentiation Strategies
For Emerging Navigators
Provide "Path Cards" with screenshots of the folders to act as a visual prompt before they search the physical device.
For Advanced Users
Challenge them to find two different ways to say the same thing (e.g., using Core vs. Fringe) and decide which is faster.
COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
"Mapping is boring." -> Reframe this as "Programming your brain." Compare it to a gamer learning the controls for a new video game or an athlete learning a play.

Observational Tip:
Watch for "hunting" behavior. If a student is scrolling through pages repeatedly, pause and review the folder map from Lesson 1. Motor planning is about *knowing* the path before moving the hand.

Helping customers means finding answers fast. Let's race to the finish!
The Speedrun Goal
Your Objective:
Respond to a customer's specific question by navigating to the Product or Location folder in under 15 seconds.

When things go wrong, your device is your safety tool. Let's find the help you need.
When to use "Help"
A Spill
"I need a mop" or "I made a mess."
Injury
"I am hurt" or "I need a bandage."
Tech Failure
"Wait" or "My device is low."
Where is the Alarm?
Crucial Path:
Usually under "Social" or "Personal Needs" or a dedicated "Emergency" button.
Zero Latency Goal
In an emergency, you shouldn't have to "think" about where the button is. Your hand should just go there.
The "Wait" Strategy
If you make a mistake or the device is acting up, use these Repair Phrases :
"Please wait while I find it."
"That's not what I meant."
"Let me start over."
"I need a moment."
