For middle schoolers, we frame self-regulation as managing the **Sensory Line** on a school transit map. Noise, lighting, crowds, fatigue, stress, and anxiety are all environmental factors that can affect readiness.
The Objective: Help students audit their current activation level, identify personal body signals, and employ active recovery buffers.

2. Tracking Activation States
💤 Under-Activated Possible signs include low energy, tiredness, slower responses, staring, difficulty beginning, or repeatedly losing focus. May benefit from stretching or water.
🟢 Focus Ready Energy and attention support engagement. The student can identify the goal and participate using strategies or supports (standing desk, headphones).
🔴 Over-Activated Frequent movement, muscle tension in neck/shoulders, quick speech, racing thoughts, frustration, avoidance, or starting difficulty. May benefit from quiet.
*Note: No activation state is universally good or bad. Fast energy supports gym; steady energy supports testing. The goal is matching, not compliance.
3. Direct Instruction Protocol
Introduce the **Sensory Line**. Guide students to identify physical symptoms of over-activation. Emphasize that regulation tools are not prizes or punishments, but fuel cells—optional strategies used to manage their personal energy levels.

💡 Connecting Week 1 to Week 2: A student can have a perfectly regulated, ready body (Week 1) but still feel completely lost on where to find their locker key, how to file loose sheets, or how to start a multi-step project (Week 2). Regulation prepares focus, but executive strategies organize the learning.

Why we do it: When our body engine is moving very fast, it may be harder to control our movements, give others enough space, hear directions, or complete our work. Identifying our engine speeds helps us choose helpful reset strategies to match classroom situations.
