Why Digital Mapping?
For students with Executive Function (EF) deficits, the transition from "idea" to "structured sentence" is often blocked by cognitive overload. Traditional outlining requires simultaneous organization and sequencing. Digital mind-mapping decouples these tasks, allowing for a non-linear brain dump followed by low-friction structural manipulation .

I Phase One: The Digital Brain Dump
Instruct the student to create nodes for every thought, regardless of hierarchy. The goal is quantity and speed , not quality.
Teacher Script: "Don't worry about where it goes yet. Just get every 'bubble' out onto the screen. If you think of a detail about sharks' teeth, make a bubble. If you think of a detail about their habitat, make a bubble. We will sort them later."
II Phase Two: Semantic Clustering
Using drag-and-drop, students group related nodes. This is where categorization happens visually without the penalty of erasing or rewriting.
Coaching Prompt:
"Look at your bubbles. Which ones are 'friends'? Can you drag all the 'habitat' bubbles into one corner?"
The Visual Cue:
Encourage using different colors or icons for different clusters to reinforce the category distinction.
III Phase Three: The Outline Pivot
The "Magic Moment." Most tools (Inspiration, MindMeister, XMind) have an Outline View button. This converts the visual map into a linear text outline.
Pedagogical Pivot Point
Students often realize their clusters don't flow logically once they see them as a list. Use this view to teach sequencing . Ask: "Now that it's a list, does paragraph 1 lead naturally to paragraph 2?"

Common Misconceptions
"The tool writes for them." -> Reality: The tool only displays their logic. If the map is messy, the outline will be messy. This reveals instruction needs, rather than masking them.

Implementation Note
Cut these cards out and tape them to the side of a student's monitor or tablet. These visual cues offload the working memory requirement of remembering specific commands, allowing the student to focus entirely on composition.

The Coaching Stance
Teaching Speech-to-Text (STT) is not about tech support; it is about cognitive coaching. Your role is to scaffold the student's ability to "think like a writer" before they "act like a speaker."
Avoid this Trap: "Just say what you want to write." This often leads to rambling and high cognitive load.
Modeling Script: The "Vulnerable Think-Aloud"
Sit next to the student. Open a blank doc. Turn on your own STT and say:
TEACHER: "Okay, I want to write about dogs. First, I'm thinking of my sentence... 'Golden retrievers are very friendly dogs.' I have it in my head. Mic on."
MIC: "Golden retrievers are very friendly dogs period"
TEACHER: "Wait, the computer didn't capitalize 'Golden.' That's okay. I'm not going to fix it now. I'm focusing on my next sentence..."
High-Frequency Coaching Prompts
If the student is rambling...
Prompt: "Wait. Mic off. Catch the sentence in your hands first."
Encourage them to physically cup their hands as if they are holding a single thought. They only release it (and the mic) when it is ready.
If the student stops to fix every typo...
Prompt: "Keep the momentum. Typing errors are for future-you to fix."
Explain that the "Drafting Brain" and "Editing Brain" can't work at the same time. STT is for the drafting brain.
Scaffolding "Clean Speech"
The "Magic Eraser" Technique
When students say filler words (um, uh, like), the transcription gets messy. Teach the "Delete That" Command as a reflex, not a failure.
Exercise:
Have the student intentionally say a sentence with a mistake, then use the voice command to erase it. Normalize the error-correction loop.
Target:
Reduce the 'shame' of the typo. Many students with disabilities view typos as a sign of failure; STT turns them into a mechanical byproduct.

Why TTS?
Students with dyslexia or ADHD often "over-read"—their brains fill in the gaps of what they meant to write, masking the actual syntax errors on the page.
The Ear is More Honest

Step 2: The Listen-Read
How to do it: Click at the start of your writing. Use your finger or cursor to follow the words as the computer reads them.
The "Breath-Less" Run-on
Did the computer read a whole paragraph without pausing? If it sounds like the computer is "running out of breath," you probably missed a period .
FIX: Look for where you would stop to take a breath and add a .
The "Hiccup" (Missing Word)
Did a sentence sound "bumpy" or confusing? Sometimes our brains skip a word like "the," "is," or "to" when we type.
FIX: Rewind and listen again. Does it sound like a real person talking?
The Homophone Trap
Does the word sound right but look wrong? (Example: "I wood go" instead of "I would go").
FIX: If it sounds right, check the spelling! (There/Their/They're).

When the adult always clicks the 'mic' button, the student learns the tool only works when the teacher is present.
Radical Independence:
The student knows how to check their own WiFi, restart their own app, and set their own goals.
