High-Frequency Data Option
Operational Definitions of Prompt Hierarchy
Least-to-Most Prompting Continuum
Verbal Prompt (V) Low Intrusiveness
Repeating the original adult directive, rephrasing the sentence, or providing an explicit direct spoken cue after the latency window.
Example: "Lucas, open your workbook to page 12." (Wait 3s) → "Workbook open, please."
Visual Prompt (Vis) Low/Moderate
Presenting picture exchange cards, visual schedule icons, pointing/gesturing toward materials, or tapping a written checklist.
Example: Staff points directly to the pencil and paper, or flashes a "Line Up" PECS card.
Modeling Prompt (M) Moderate
Adult or designated peer visibly demonstrates the exact physical action expected of the student without physical contact.
Example: Staff walks to backpack cubby, zips jacket, or folds hands while standing in front of the student.
Physical Prompt (P) High Intrusiveness
Partial physical guide (gentle tap at elbow/shoulder) or full physical guidance (hand-over-hand assistance) to initiate the task.
Example: Gentle guidance at wrist to grasp the crayon or gentle touch on the back to begin walking in line.

Behavioral Insights & Prompt Fading Recommendations
High-Resistance Directions:
e.g., Non-preferred academic tasks, abrupt transitions from free play, multi-step commands...
Most Effective Prompt Modality:
e.g., Responds quickly to visual icon schedule and non-verbal gesture without needing verbal repetition...
Next Step Fading Target:
e.g., Fade verbal prompts by increasing latency wait time from 3s to 5s; transition physical prompts to modeling...
