Topic: Fidgets as Learning Tools
Dear Families,
In our classroom, we recognize that every student learns in unique ways. For many learners, gentle tactile movement helps improve attention, relieve restlessness, and support emotional regulation. We welcome the thoughtful use of fidgets when they function as learning tools that enhance focus, rather than toys that distract from learning.
To maintain a productive environment for everyone, we have established clear guidelines on how and when fidgets may be used at school.
The Core Difference: Tool vs. Toy
It is a TOOL when...
- Hands are moving, but eyes remain on work/speaker.
- It makes zero audible sound for classmates.
- It rests quietly in the student's lap or workspace.
- It helps the mind stay centered on instruction.
It becomes a TOY when...
- The student is watching or playing with it visually.
- It clicks, squeaks, pops, or rolls on hard desks.
- It is tossed, spun in the air, or shown to peers.
- It distracts the user or surrounding classmates.
The Three Golden Rules
1
Silent Operation
Must produce no clicks, squeaks, or rhythmic tapping.
2
Kept in Personal Space
Held in hand or lap; never tossed, traded, or shared.
3
Eyes on Learning
Attention stays focused on the teacher, text, or assignment.
When Are They Used?
Permitted Times:
Mini-lessons, read-alouds, independent reading, and quiet work.
Parked Away:
Hallway transitions, playground, cafeteria, science labs, and quizzes.
The "Fidget Garage" Reset Protocol
If a fidget causes a distraction, the teacher will gently issue one discreet reminder. If the issue continues, the item is "parked" on the teacher's desk for the remainder of the period and returned at dismissal.
Bringing Fidgets From Home
Classroom sensory items are provided. If your child brings a personal tool, please ensure it is silent, non-valuable, labeled with their name, and approved by the teacher.
Thank you for partnering with us to build a calm, focused, and supportive learning space. Please review these expectations with your child, sign below, and return the slip by Friday.
Please sign & return to school
Fidget Expectations Agreement Slip
I have read and discussed the classroom fidget expectations with my child. We understand that sensory fidgets are tools for learning that must remain quiet, in personal space, and put away during non-fidget times.
