Targeted Intervention Protocol
Uppercase Letter Quest: Lesson Plan
Direct Instruction Framework • 15–20 Min Daily Daily Tier 2/3 Support
IEP Mastery Target
26 / 26 Letters (3 Consecutive)
Measurable IEP / Intervention Objective
Given a randomized presentation of all 26 uppercase English letters, the student will independently and accurately vocalize the correct letter name for 26 out of 26 letters (100% accuracy) across three consecutive biweekly informal assessments within 3 seconds per letter.
Strategic Letter Grouping & Visual Distinctiveness Sequence
Family 1: Lines 6 Letters
L • T • I • H • F • E
Focus on top-to-bottom vertical strokes and horizontal bars.
Family 2: Curves 6 Letters
C • O • Q • G • S • U
Contrast open vs closed curves; highlight tail on Q and bar on G.
Family 3: Diagonals 9 Letters
V • W • X • Y • Z • A • K • M • N
Slant lines; anchor visual points (M has 2 peaks; W has 2 valleys).
Family 4: Combos 5 Letters
B • D • P • R • J
Straight line + curved lobe; distinguish B (2 bellies) vs D/P (1).
Immediate 4-Step Error Correction Protocol (No "Guess Again")
Step 1: MODEL
"My turn. This letter is B."
Do not debate or wait.
Step 2: LEAD
"Let's say it together. Letter name: B."
Vocalize unison response.
Step 3: TEST
"Your turn. What letter is this?"
Student says "B" solo.
Step 4: DELAYED RETEST
Present 2 known cards, then re-present B.
Secures retention.
Daily 15-Minute Direct Instruction Routine
1
Rapid Flash Warm-Up (3 mins) Slides or printed flash deck
Review 10-15 mastered letters + 3 target focus letters at a brisk 2-second pace.
2
Explicit Feature Modeling - "I Do" (4 mins) Slide deck focus visual
Introduce 2 new or confusing letters (e.g. M vs W). Trace strokes while stating name aloud.
3
Guided Discrimination - "We Do" (5 mins) Spot & Shout / Tactile mat
Student locates target letters from arrays of 3 to 5 options. Multi-sensory sky-writing & sand tracing.
4
Independent Sprint & Check - "You Do" (3 mins) Handout Mission Trail
Student stamps or circles identified letters independently. Teacher logs immediate error checks.

Differentiation & Biweekly Assessment Protocol
Informal Biweekly Criteria
Standardized Biweekly Informal Assessment Protocol (Every 10 School Days)
1. Randomized Presentation
Present the 26-letter student stimulus sheet (randomized order, NEVER A-Z alphabetical order). Prevents rote singing recitation.
2. 3-Second Wait Limit
Prompt: "Tell me this letter name." Allow exactly 3 seconds of thinking time per letter before moving card pointer to next letter.
3. Objective Scoring
Record (+) for accurate letter name, (-) for incorrect or no response. Record exact student vocalization for error pattern diagnosis.
Data-Based Decision Rules (3 Consecutive Biweekly Mastery)
| Score Pattern | Data Condition | Instructional Action Required |
|---|
| 26/26 on 3 Consecutive Biweekly Checks | 6 weeks of sustained 100% naming fluency | Goal Mastered! Transition to lowercase identification & letter-sound correspondence. |
| 23-25 out of 26 Letters | Near-mastery with persistent isolated error | Isolate persistent confusion (e.g. Q vs O; U vs V). Conduct daily targeted contrast sprints. |
| Plateau (< 22 letters across 2 checks) | Less than 2 letters gained in 4 weeks | Reduce active target letter pool to sets of 4. Increase multi-sensory kinesthetic cues (sandpaper, Wiki Stix). |
| Regression (> 3 errors on prior letters) | Previously mastered letters lost | Reintroduce cumulative review warm-up before adding any new letter targets. |
Key Uppercase Visual Pitfalls & Verbal Anchor Cues
B vs. D vs. P Lobes / Bellies
Anchor: "B has 2 big bellies; D has 1 huge tummy; P has 1 high head at the top."
M vs. W Directional Peaks
Anchor: "M points UP to the mountains; W dips DOWN in the water."
E vs. F Horizontal Bars
Anchor: "E has 3 shelves (top, middle, bottom); F has only 2 shelves (missing bottom)."
IEP Accommodations & Sensory Modifications
Visual / Attention Adjustments:
- Use a single-letter sliding viewing window (isolates 1 letter at a time).
- Enlarge letter stimulus to 72pt sans-serif font for low-vision needs.
- Position student directly facing the teacher to observe mouth articulation.
Motor / Kinesthetic Modalities:
- Tactile finger tracing on textured sandpaper letter cards before verbalizing.
- Gross-motor skywriting using entire arm to engage motor-memory pathways.
- Provide bingo daubers for quick student response tracking during practice.

Scoring Criteria
- (+) Correct: Accurate letter name verbalized within 3 seconds. Self-correction within 3s counts as correct.
- (-) Incorrect: Wrong letter name, letter sound only (without name), or hesitation > 3 seconds.
- Sound vs Name Prompt: If student gives letter sound only, prompt once: "Tell me its name."
Goal Mastery Verification
- Criteria: 26 out of 26 (100%) on 3 consecutive biweekly probes.
- Cadence: Probes occur every 2 weeks (approx. 10 instructional days apart).
- Consecutive Rule: Any score < 26 resets the consecutive count to 0.
