Regulation Reset Staff Guide
IEP & 504 Accommodation Guide Tier 1 & Tier 2 Practical Support
Regulation Reset Staff Guide
Structured & Supervised
Core Purpose: Breaks are proactive, individualized interventions that prevent escalation, regulate sensory overload, and cultivate self-advocacy so students can re-engage in learning safely.
4-Stage Classroom Implementation Cycle
STEP 1
Prompt / Request
Student presents break card or signal. Adult validates discreetly before crisis point.
Rule: Respond without debate.
STEP 2
Select Space
Direct to pre-approved zone: desk reset, calm corner, or designated walk route.
Rule: Adult line-of-sight always.
STEP 3
Time & Regulate
Start visual timer (3–5 min standard). Student picks targeted coping activity.
Rule: 1-minute warning countdown.
STEP 4
Reintegrate
Calm transition back. Offer lowered barrier (e.g., read 1 sentence, do 1 item first).
Rule: Positive, low-key return.
Common Pitfalls & Guardrails
Pitfall: Unsupervised Breaks High Risk
Guardrail: All breaks require active oversight. Never send a dysregulated student to unmonitored hallways or restrooms.
Pitfall: Overuse & Task Avoidance Pattern Check
Guardrail: When breaks spike during specific tasks, chunk academic demands and establish predictable daily break limits.
Pitfall: Inconsistent Staff Norms Alignment
Guardrail: Adhere strictly to the written IEP/504 parameters (duration, frequency, permitted activities). Log each usage.
Student Independence Ladder
1
Adult Prompted: Teacher notices early tension cues and offers break pass proactively.
2
Self-Advocacy: Student recognizes bodily signs and initiates break signal independently.
3
In-Seat Coping: Student applies micro-reset tools without needing to leave workspace.
Post-Break Student Check-In Prompts
• "Did that break help you reset?"
• "What strategy worked best today?"
• "Can you tell when you need one?"
• "What helps you stay engaged next?"
