Lesson Architecture
How to define bulletproof learning goals, choose high-leverage activities, and prove student mastery in every single period.
Pillar 1
Goal Clarity
Pillar 2
Proof of Learning
Pillar 3
Activity Alignment
The Mindset Shift
Escaping the Activity Trap
01 / 05
The Activity Trap (Forward)
"What fun or engaging project can my students do tomorrow?"
- Focuses on student busyness over cognitive demand
- Assessment is an afterthought slapped at the end
- Teachers say: "I taught it, but they didn't get it"
Result: High engagement, low measurable retention.
Backward Design (Aligned)
"What must students know, and what evidence proves they know it?"
- Step 1: Define the exact, observable mastery goal
- Step 2: Design the check for understanding first
- Step 3: Build only activities that lead directly to the check
Result: Intentional practice with immediate actionable data.
Golden Rule: Plan the destination and assessment BEFORE choosing a single worksheet or activity.
Pillar 1: The Destination
Writing a Razor-Sharp Learning Goal
02 / 05
The Observable Objective Formula
Students will be able to [Active Verb] + [Content Core] by [Measurable Product / Criteria].
Fuzzy & Unmeasurable (Avoid)
"Students will understand fractions."
→ How do you see "understanding" inside a brain?
"Students will read chapter 4 of the book."
→ Reading is an activity, not a mastery skill!
Actionable & Observable (Adopt)
"Students will compare 3 pairs of unlike fractions with common denominators on a number line."
"Students will cite two textual quotes to defend the protagonist's motive in a 4-sentence exit slip."
Pro Tip: Swap internal verbs (understand, learn, appreciate) with observable actions (calculate, contrast, justify, model).
Pillar 2: The Proof
Designing Authentic Proof of Mastery
03 / 05
The Litmus Test Question:
"Before students leave the room, how will I know that 100% of students achieved the goal—not just the 3 kids who raised their hands?"
1
Hinge-Point Question
A single, diagnostic multiple-choice question where every wrong option diagnoses a specific misconception.
Takes: 2 minutes mid-lesson
2
Targeted Exit Ticket
1 or 2 bite-sized prompts testing the exact action verb from the objective. Graded in 4 minutes using a 3-pile sort.
Takes: 5 minutes at lesson close
3
Simultaneous Show
Mini-whiteboards, finger signals (1-4), or digital poll. Every student reveals work simultaneously on count of 3.
Takes: 60 seconds continuous
Never rely on: "Does everyone understand?" or "Any questions?" Silence is never evidence of learning.
Pillar 3: The Journey
Choosing & Sequencing Aligned Activities
04 / 05
Every learning activity must act as a direct rehearsal for the final check. Use the Cognitive Match Rule:
01. Model / "I Do"
Explicit Think-Aloud
Break down the exact mental steps. Show what mastery looks like and reveal common traps explicitly.
Time: 7-10 min (Keep it tight)
02. Guide / "We Do"
Structured Rehearsal
Partner work, choral responses, or guided sentence frames. Immediate error correction before independent flight.
Time: 12-15 min (Heavy lift)
03. Prove / "You Do"
Independent Proof
Individual practice that matches the verb and rigor of the objective. Teacher circulates with clipboard data.
Time: 10-12 min (Zero assists)
Alignment Check: If the objective verb is "analyze causes," students cannot spend 25 minutes coloring a title page or copying definitions!
Hands-On Application
The 12-Minute Lesson Sprint
12 Minutes Total
Phase 1: 4 Mins
Define & Prove
Open your Sprint Worksheet. Write an observable objective with an active Bloom's verb.
• Draft your 1-question Exit Slip immediately after the goal.
Phase 2: 4 Mins
Build The Arc
Select 2 core activities (1 Guided Rehearsal + 1 Independent Proof) that directly lead to the check.
• Verify: Does the activity require the exact cognitive level of the goal?
Phase 3: 4 Mins
Peer Speed-Check
Swap with your partner. Complete the 3-question Litmus Test on their worksheet:
• Is the goal observable?
• Does the CFU prove it?
• Are activities aligned?
On Your Table: Work individually for 8 minutes, then partner for 4 minutes of rapid critique. TIMER READY
Wrap-Up & Implementation
Your 3 Non-Negotiables
05 / 05
1
No Hidden Verbs
If you can't see it or hear it, you can't measure it. Always write observable action verbs in your lesson objectives.
2
CFU Before Activities
Design the exit ticket or mastery proof immediately after writing the goal. Let the proof dictate the instructional path.
3
Trim the Fluff
Eliminate any activity—no matter how creative—that doesn't directly practice the specific target verb and content.
Next Action Step:
Use this exact backward architecture in your lesson plan for tomorrow morning.

The Backward Design Rule
1. Set the Measurable Destination → 2. Design the Proof (CFU) → 3. Sequence Aligned Activities
Time: 12 Min Sprint
A Sprint Scenario — Choose One Topic to Plan For:
• STEM Option
Solving 2-step linear equations or modeling photosynthesis.
• Humanities Option
Identifying author's tone or analyzing causes of the American Revolution.
• Your Own Lesson
Any upcoming unit standard you will teach this week.
1 Step 1: Draft Your Observable Learning Goal (4 Mins)
Formula: Verb + Content + Criteria
Verb Bank (Observable): Calculate, Justify, Classify, Compare, Formulate, Model, Contrast, Defend. Avoid passive/fuzzy verbs: know, understand, explore, learn about, appreciate.
Write your measurable learning goal below:
2 Step 2: Design the Proof of Mastery (CFU) (4 Mins)
Plan the evidence BEFORE the activities
Check Type (Select One):
Exit Ticket Hinge Question Whiteboard Show
Target Mastery Standard:
What constitutes 100% success? (e.g., 3 out of 3 correct; rubric level 3).
The Exact Student Prompt / Question:
Exemplar Student Response / Master Answer:

Lesson Architecture Sprint
Part 2: The Learning Arc & Peer Critique
Steps 3 & 4 (8 Minutes Total)
3 Step 3: Build the Aligned Activity Sequence (4 Mins)
Rule: Every activity must rehearse the verb!
1. Hook & Direct Model (5-8 Mins) Teacher Think-Aloud / Anchor Example
2. Guided Rehearsal / "We Do" (12-15 Mins) Partner talk, shared work, immediate feedback
3. Independent Application / "You Do" (10-12 Mins) Solo task directly leading to exit check
4 Step 4: 4-Minute Peer Speed-Critique (Swap Papers)
Partner: ________________________
1. Observable Goal?
Uses an active, external verb instead of vague "understand".
Yes Almost
2. Aligned CFU?
Check for understanding proves the exact verb in the goal.
Yes Almost
3. Cognitive Match?
Activities rehearse the specific task, not fluff/busyness.

Facilitator Circulation Prompts (During the 8-Minute Solo Sprint)
If you see a fuzzy verb ("understand", "learn"):
Ask: "If a visitor walked into your classroom at minute 40, what exact physical action would they see students doing to prove they 'understand'?"
If you see an activity masquerading as an objective:
Ask:
