Handwriting Fluency
Automatic letter formation without finger cramping; consistent baseline anchoring.
Sentence Integrity
Capitalization, single finger spacing between words, and terminal punctuation.
Writing Stamina
Sustained on-task writing for 2+ continuous minutes without cognitive burnout.
Step 1: 2-Minute Sensory Proprioceptive Warm-Up (Mandatory Before Pencils)
Prevents Fatigue
1. Desk Push-Ups Place palms flat on desk, press down to lift body slightly. Holds 5 sec x 3 reps to wake up shoulder stabilizers.
2. Spider Push-Ups Fingertips together in dome shape; push finger pads together then spring apart. Wakes hand arches.
3. Pencil Rocket Pinch Pinch pencil 1 inch from tip using thumb & index pads; rest on middle finger ("tripod nest"). Avoid death-grips.
Step 2: Explicit "I Do / We Do" Modeling Script
High Clarity
Teacher Anchor Script (Letter Heights & Baseline): Say out loud:
"Watch my pencil. Every letter has a home! Tall letters like t, l, and b reach up to the Sky . Short letters like a, c, and m stay cozy under the Grass line . And tail letters like g and y dig down into the Dirt . Letβs make sure no letters float like lost balloons!"
The "Spaceman Finger" Rule: Physical prompt:
"When words bump into each other, my brain cannot read them! Before we write the next word, lay down your pointer finger (or craft stick). Your pencil starts on the other side of your finger. Look at that clean launch pad!"
Sentence Formula Formula (Who + Action + Finisher): Verbal cue:
"A sentence is a complete thought train. Box 1 gives us the Engine (Who). Box 2 gives us the Track (Did What). Box 3 brings the Caboose (Where/How) and the STOP sign (period). Letβs say it together before we write it!"

Executive Function & Attention Accommodations
Differentiation & Roadblock Toolkit
1. Use Visual Sand or Digital Timers
Avoid open-ended writing tasks which trigger avoidance and panic. Set a physical sand timer or visual red-disk clock for exactly 2 minutes . Tell the student: "You only write until the sand drops, then we celebrate!"
2. Screen Out Visual Clutter
Fold the worksheet horizontally so only one mission section is visible at a time, or place an index card mask over upcoming sections to prevent cognitive overwhelm and scanning distractions.
3. Oral Rehearsal Before Graphite
Never ask an attention-fatigued student to think of an idea and write it simultaneously. Have them whisper the sentence to their pencil twice. Once the verbal motor plan is locked, they transcribe it with ease.
4. Regulate with Pencil Grip Slopes
Use a small foam pencil grip or place a 2-inch binder under the worksheet to create a 20-degree slant board. This extends the wrist, increases thumb web space, and drastically reduces hand fatigue.
On-The-Spot Interventions for Common Roadblocks
Letter Reversals (b / d): Teach the "Bed" trick: Both hands make thumbs-up circles touching together; 'b' is on the left, 'd' is on the right. Trace the belly of 'b' on the desk first.
Floating Off Baseline: Take a yellow highlighter and illuminate the baseline across the sheet before writing. Instruct the student: "Every single letter's feet must touch the sunbeam line!"
Writing Refusal / "I Can't": Offer a "Co-Pilot Contract": The teacher writes the first two words (e.g., "The robot"), and the student writes the next word. Momentum dissolves resistance.
Stamina & Fluency Observation Rubric Score 1 (Emerging) to 3 (Consistent)
Skill Target Level 1 (Needs Cue) Level 2 (Inconsistent) Level 3 (Autonomous) Letter Sizing Frequent floating; size erratic Tall letters distinct; few baseline slips All letters anchored on baseline Word Spacing Words blend together Uses finger tool when reminded Natural 1-letter width spacing Writing Stamina Fatigues < 45 seconds Sustains 1 to 2 minutes with pause Sustains 2β3 continuous minutes Self-Editing Ignores periods / capitals Catches errors with visual checklist Independently checks capital & period
Next Session Stamina Goal: Advance from 2-minute sprint to 2.5 minutes using the Rocket Stamina Chart.
