Purpose of the Matrix
This matrix identifies the functional overlap between the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for eleventh-grade core subjects. By aligning these standards, educators can design instruction that reinforces cognitive skills across disciplines, increasing student mastery and retention.

Cognitive Overlap Summary
Strategic Logic (Alg 2 & Chem)
Both Algebra 2 and Chemistry rely heavily on the manipulation of variables and proportional reasoning. The stoichiometry in Chemistry mirrors the transformation of functions in Algebra 2; both require a systematic approach to solving for unknowns while maintaining the integrity of an equation or reaction.
Narrative of Evidence (ELA & USH)
English 3 and US History share the burden of source evaluation. Students must distinguish between bias, perspective, and objective fact. The rhetorical analysis in ELA (examining how a message is delivered) directly supports the historical analysis of primary documents (examining why a document was created and its impact).
The Investigative Model (All)
The common thread across all four is the Inquiry Cycle: identify a problem/question, gather relevant evidence (textual, historical, scientific, or numerical), apply a specific methodology to analyze that evidence, and communicate a justified conclusion.
The Language of Data (All)
The ability to interpret non-linear models and complex infographics is shared. US History uses demographic trends, ELA uses visual rhetoric, Chemistry uses gas laws/kinetics graphs, and Algebra 2 provides the mathematical backbone for understanding these exponential and logarithmic behaviors.
Implementation Note
Educators should use these shared TEKS categories to create "Common Vocabulary" lists. For instance, when a Chemistry teacher says "Evaluate your data," it should align with the "Evaluate sources" language in English 3 and the "Justify your solution" language in Algebra 2.
