Paired Cognitive-Linguistic Session • 25–30 Minutes
2-Student Differentiated
A
Role: The Divergent Sparker
Target: Divergent Categorization & Cognitive Flexibility
Generates 3+ novel items fitting given semantic categories without word banks.
Identifies cross-cutting features to create unexpected categories.
Produces creative members that fit 2 overlapping categories simultaneously.
B
Role: The Master Sorter
Target: Convergent Categorization & Critical Sorting
Sorts concrete items/cards into 3 defined category bins with ≥85% accuracy.
States the defining feature or rule governing each category group.
Detects non-members and explains why an outlier doesn't belong.
The Interactive Rally Protocol (Each Round)
1. Convergent Sort
Student B takes 6 item cards and sorts them into the 3 designated topic bins, stating the category rationale aloud.
2. Partner Check
Student A verifies the sorting placements, confirms or questions any ambiguous choices, and validates B's reasoning.
3. Divergent Spark
Student A generates 2 fresh items for each bin (not from cards) PLUS 1 hybrid item that fits two bins at once.
4. Mystery Link
Both Students collaborate: Student A gives a 3-item riddle; Student B guesses the hidden category and sorts the final card.

Scaffolding, Cueing & Assessment
Tiered Teacher Support & Dual-Metric Observation Checklist
Educator Facilitation
Divergent Scaffolding Cues (Student A)
Tier 1 (Minimal):
"Think of a place, texture, or action. Where else do you see items that belong in this group?"
Tier 2 (Feature Anchor):
"Let's restrict by color or size: Name a huge item that fits this category, then a tiny one."
Tier 3 (Sentence Stem):
"In the kitchen, when we bake cookies, we need butter and sugar, but we also use a..."
Convergent Scaffolding Cues (Student B)
Tier 1 (Definition Prompt):
"Look at the picture. What does it do? Where does it live or belong most of the time?"
Tier 2 (Binary Choice):
"Does a dolphin breathe underwater with gills like a fish, or does it come up for air?"
Tier 3 (Physical Feature Check):
"Feel your shirt. Is this item made to keep rain out or warm your hands in snow?"
Common Roadblocks & Quick Redirections
Student A Fixates on Obvious Items:
If Student A only names basic items (e.g., cat, dog), add an attribute constraint: "Great! Now name one that lives underground or has no fur."
Student B Sorts by Color/Appearance:
If Student B pairs an apple with a red boat, ask: "Are they both used for traveling, or is one for eating? What is their main job?"
Dual-Skill Session Observation Tracker
Skill Dimension Developing (1 pt) Proficient (2 pts) Advanced (3 pts) Student A: Divergent Fluency & Novelty Generates 1 item with high scaffolding; repeats cards. Generates 2–3 novel members per bin with minimal prompting. Generates 3+ diverse items and explains multi-category crossover. Student B: Sorting Accuracy & Logic Sorts 3–4 items correctly; relies on superficial cues. Sorts 5–6 items correctly; articulates category function. 100% accurate; immediately justifies rules and rejects outliers. Paired Collaboration & Turn-Taking Needs teacher mediation to alternate speaking turns. Listens and validates partner's responses respectfully. Actively builds upon partner's ideas and challenges constructively.
Session Debrief (2 Minutes)
Ask Student A: "Which category was the hardest to invent new items for? Why?"
Ask Student B: "Which card was tricky to sort? What clues helped you decide?"
