Desert Fox Reading Passage Wildlife Field Notes • Grade 4
Desert Armor: The Fennec Fox
Name: ___________________
Date: _________
Field Vocabulary
adaptation:
A body part or behavior that helps an animal survive.
nocturnal:
Sleeping during hot daytime and waking at night.
burrow:
An underground tunnel or home dug for protection.
¶ 1
The Sahara Desert in Africa is one of the hottest places on Earth. Temperatures can climb higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and water is extremely hard to find. Most animals would perish in this blazing heat, but the fennec fox has remarkable adaptations that allow it to thrive. Weighing only three pounds, this pint-sized creature is the smallest fox on the planet.
¶ 2
The fennec fox’s most famous feature is its giant ears, which grow up to six inches long! These huge bat-like ears act like personal air conditioners. Blood vessels close to the skin inside the ears release trapped body heat into the air, which keeps the fox cool. The ears also serve as super-sensitive radar dishes, allowing the fox to hear beetles, lizards, and rodents scuttling underneath the sand.
¶ 3
Walking across burning sand would fry bare skin, so the fennec fox has specialized paws. The bottoms of its feet are covered in thick, woolly fur. This fur acts like protective oven mitts against scorching heat. It also provides extra grip, letting the fox sprint swiftly across loose sand dunes without sinking or slipping while chasing prey.
¶ 4
Behavior is another key adaptation. The fennec fox is strictly nocturnal . When the sun bakes the desert, the fox sleeps inside a deep underground burrow where temperatures stay up to thirty degrees cooler. At night, it emerges to hunt. It can survive without drinking standing water because its body absorbs all the liquid it needs from leaves, roots, and juicy prey.

Read • Identify • Color
Read the sample 4th-grade student response below. Use colored pencils or highlighters to underline each sentence according to its R.A.C.E.S. role:
RED = Restate & Answer
BLUE = Cite Evidence
GREEN = Explain
PURPLE = Sum Up
[1] One physical adaptation that helps the fennec fox survive the Sahara Desert heat is its giant six-inch ears.
[2] According to paragraph 2, the author states that blood vessels inside the large ears release trapped body heat into the air to keep the fox cool.
[3] This shows that the fox’s ears act like radiators, preventing the fox from overheating even when desert temperatures pass 120 degrees.
[4] To sum up, having oversized ears is a vital body adaptation that protects the tiny fox from dangerous desert heat.

Part 2: Complete the Missing Evidence
Sentence Surgery
This student wrote their Restate & Answer, but forgot to complete their text citation and explanation. Fill in the blanks below using facts from paragraph 3 :
[R + A] Completed:
"Another key adaptation of the fennec fox is its furry foot pads."
[C] Complete the Citation:
According to paragraph 3, the text states that “the bottoms of its feet are covered in
which act like protective oven mitts against scorching heat.”
[E] Complete the Explanation:
This evidence explains that without this thick fur, the fox would
when walking on the burning sand dunes.

Teacher Think-Aloud Script: "I Do" Modeling (Ears Adaptation)
“Watch me turn our question into our topic sentence. The question asks: How does a physical trait help the fennec fox survive? I will cross out 'How does' . I start: 'One physical adaptation that helps the fennec fox survive is its giant ears.' Notice I restated AND answered!”
“Now, I cannot just say 'trust me, it stays cool.' I need proof from our author! In paragraph 2, I find: 'blood vessels close to the skin release trapped body heat into the air.' I write quotation marks around those exact words so my reader knows I am borrowing the author's facts.”
“Here is the hardest step for detectives: EXPLAIN. Don't just repeat the quote! Ask yourself: Why does this matter? I say: 'This shows that the fox can stay cool naturally without needing water or air conditioning in the 120-degree heat.' That is the secret to getting a 4 on our rubric!”
