Safe Harbor Teacher Guide
Scaffolded Resilience (Grade 7)
Safe Harbor Guide
Discreet, active accommodations designed to scaffold participation—not enable avoidance.
Focus: Graduated Exposure
Scaffolding vs. Avoidance: Completely removing anxiety triggers (e.g., permanent presentation exemptions) validates fear and enables long-term avoidance. True accommodations act as a temporary exposure ladder—providing immediate safety while gradually fading support to build independent student confidence.
Social & Performance Ladders
Bridges middle-school social fear with structured steps toward full class participation.
Cued calling ladder
Start by placing a sticky prompt on their desk. Fade to a pre-arranged silent nod, training the ADHD brain to prepare for independent participation.
Faded Group Roles
Begin with highly structured, predictable partner roles (e.g., Scribe). Fade support over several weeks to multi-peer, open-ended group labs.
Presentation Steps
Scaffold presentation: Video recording → Live 1-on-1 with teacher → Present to 3 selected peers → Full class delivery. Never let avoidance become the default.
Sensory, Panic & Restlessness
Mitigates flight urges and sensory overload within a rigid class-period structure.
Functional Errands
Provide a structured physical outlet (e.g., taking attendance box to the main office) to channel adrenaline and reset the nervous system constructively.
Stealth Sensory
Silent, age-appropriate tools (velcro strip placed under the desk lip or dynamic rubber bands around chair feet) satisfy sensory needs without attracting peer notice.
The Library Refuge
A safe, designated environment (library or counseling alcove) is authorized for up to 10 minutes to de-escalate panic, after which the student returns to class.
Academic & Test Stressors
Structures cognitive load to combat distractibility, working-memory blocks, and task paralysis.
Class-Overpacing
Cushion extended time by arranging for completion in homeroom or study hall, preventing them from falling behind or missing rotating 7th-grade periods.
Focus Shields
Provide noise-reduction headphones and visual desk partitions to block classroom environmental triggers and shut down self-defeating peer comparison.
Task Checklists
Break long-term projects into 3 distinct, scheduled milestones (e.g., Outline → Rough Draft → Edit) to override executive freeze and sustain momentum.
Dignified Progression: Fading accommodations requires private, proactive agreements. Explain to the student: "We are starting with these safety steps so you can practice, but our goal is to help you present to the class by the end of the semester."

Physical Regulation & Sensory Outlets
Discreet "Heavy Work" Errands
Provide physical movement chore pass (e.g., carrying office slip) to de-escalate adrenaline spikes.
Discreet physical break
"Stealth" Fidgets & Grounding
Allow silent tactile under-desk strips or chair bands. Redirect/remind if tools become distractors.
No-noise sensory support
Authorized Safety Space Access (Max 10 mins)
Authorized exit token to quiet workspace (Library or counseling alcove) to recover and return.
No-questions-asked exit
Academic & Executive Function Supports
Extended Time with Cross-Period Planning
Allow exam completion in homeroom or study hall to protect adjacent 7th-grade scheduled periods.
Split testing coordination
Focus Insulation & Distraction Blocks
Provide noise-reduction headphones and a desktop folding shield during high-stakes assessments.
Blocks peer comparison
Structured Multi-Stage Checklist
Instead of open deadlines, partition assignments into a 3-step schedule (Outline → Draft → Hand-In).
