Safety Coach Guide
KINDERGARTEN LESSON COMPANION
Safety Coach Guide
Supporting students with clear visual boundaries and positive behaviors.
Learning Objective
Kindergarten students will identify and sort 9 Specific Behaviors (Run Away, Yelling, Hitting, Throwing Things, Asking for Space, Asking for a Break, Deep Breath, Take a Walk, Squeeze Hands) as Green (Safe/Helpful) or Red (Unsafe) choices.
Kindergarten Lesson Plan
1
Interactive Slide Show (15 Mins)
Present the Choice Check Slides. Lead students in responding with physical gestures: Thumbs up (👍) for Green choices and Stop hand (✋) for Red choices. Physical movement keeps active learners engaged.
2
Color & Circle Worksheet (15 Mins)
Distribute the Safety Choice Check Worksheet alongside green and red coloring markers/crayons. Project the worksheet and walk through each of the 9 large behavior cards (such as Throwing Things or Squeeze Hands) together. Guide students to circle the choices with the matching colors.
3
Laminated Sort and Carry (Daily Use)
Laminate the Safety Signal Cards. Keep a cut-out set at circle time or on a lanyard. Have individual students practice sorting cards on the Mini Sorting Mat, or use them as functional replacement communication cards (e.g. holding up Squeeze Hands or Ask Break).
Coaching Prompts for Circle Time
- "When you feel like throwing things, what Green Choice can you do with your hands instead? Can you squeeze them?"
- "How does having 'Personal Space' help make our circle time safe for our friends?"
- "Who can we check in with before leaving the rug or walking down the hallway?"
Kindergarten Adaptations
Non-Verbal / ELL Supports
Rely completely on visual modeling. Roleplay behaviors physically with puppets, asking students to show their thumbs up (👍) or stop hand (✋) cues in response.
High Behavioral Needs
Velcro the Safety Signal Cards to a desk or visual schedule. When an unsafe behavior begins, redirect by pointing to a replacement Green Card (e.g. "Breathe").
