Beach Detectives
Core Word Instruction: FIND
Target Student Population
Designed for students using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, concrete learners, and language-impaired students requiring explicit, repetitive instruction with physical and visual support.
Objectives
The student will locate and activate the core word FIND on their communication system given varied prompting levels.
The student will demonstrate understanding of "finding" by placing the target tactile cards onto the corresponding book pages.
The student will generalize the core word "FIND" across 3+ sensory beach items.
Material Prep
Print: Print the Adaptive Book and the Cutout Cards pages on cardstock.
Laminate: Laminate all pages for durability.
Velcro: Apply hook Velcro to the gray square outlines in the book and loop Velcro to the backs of the individual cutout photo cards.
Bind: Use a comb binder or metal rings on the left margin of the book to secure pages together.
Lesson Plan (4-Step Cycle)
1. Introduce & Model (5 mins)
Define "FIND" (looking for and getting something). Model "FIND" on your classroom core board/device. Hide a shell in sand or a sensory bin, locate it, and enthusiastically label: "I FIND it!"
2. Guided Book Reading (15 mins)
Open the Adaptive Book. Read the text, highlighting the highly-visible "FIND" symbol. Provide wait-time (5-10s) for the student to locate the word on their personal communication device.
3. Interactive Placement (10 mins)
Provide choices from the photo cards. Have student identify the card corresponding to the page, attach it to the velcro spot, and press the "FIND" core icon on the page/device.
4. Sensory Integration (10 mins)
Place actual items (e.g., real seashell, toy crab) into a shallow tub of sand or water. Direct student: "Let's FIND a shell!" and prompt device use.
