The Logic of Change StoryThe Logic of Change Understanding When the Plan Shifts My Mental Map I have a mental map of how my school day works. This map helps me know which subject comes next. When the plan follows my map, my brain feels calm and focused. The Update Sometimes, new information arrives and the plan needs to be updated. This doesn't mean the old plan was "wrong." It just means there is a new, logical reason to shift things around. Example: The Assembly Surprise Imagine there is a school assembly today. This is a special event where everyone goes to the gym. "Because everyone needs to be in the gym at the same time, the teachers have to move our regular lessons to different time slots. They aren't deleting my lessons; they are just rearranging them." Why Do Things Shift? There is always a logical reason for a change. A guest speaker is only available at a specific hour. The weather changed, so recess needs to move. A special event requires the whole school to be together. The new plan is a solution to a timing problem. It keeps our school day working correctly. My Flexibility Strategy Acknowledge "The plan is shifting." Logic Search "What is the reason?" Update Map "Adjust my mental plan." Changes are just updates to the day. I can handle updates with logic and facts!
Change Strategy Teacher GuideNavigating the Logical Update Supporting Hyperliterate ASD Learners Through Change The "Why" Factor For hyperliterate students, ambiguity is the primary trigger for anxiety. A schedule change is a logical "gap." Your role is to bridge that gap with facts. Avoid Ambiguity "We're doing something else now." "It's a surprise!" Provide Logical Data "The gym schedule shifted." "The guest speaker arrived early." Implementation Guide 1 Establish the Framework Read "The Logic of Change" during a calm morning meeting. Emphasize that a change is an "update" to a map, not a loss of safety. 2 The Desk Tool Routine When a change occurs, point to the "Logic Check" card. Use a dry-erase marker on the "New Map Update" card to write the specific reason and the new sequence. 3 The Assembly Transition Use the assembly as a test case. Explicitly state: "The logic for this change is that the whole school must use the gym simultaneously." The Fact-Based Script Step 1: The Alert "There is an update to our daily map. We are shifting from [Subject A] to [Subject B]." Step 2: The Logic (Crucial) "The logic for this shift is: [State Fact: e.g., The assembly starts at 10:00]. This is a solution to allow the whole school to attend." Step 3: Validating Facts "Math isn't gone; it is just scheduled for 11:30 instead. Does your brain need any more data about the shift?" Hyperliteracy Tip: Use written lists. For this student, seeing the new plan in writing is often more regulating than hearing it, as it allows them to process the logical sequence at their own pace.
