Duration
30 - 40 Minutes
Adaptive Music Learning Goals
1
Expressive Listening & Narrative Tracking
Students track story progression and indicate comprehension of sequential song verses by pointing or eye-gazing to physical/digital visual prompts.
2
Vocal Play & Active Vocalization
Students participate in the repetitive "Squeak!" vocal response using high-register vocal play, adaptive switches, or assistive vocal boards.
3
Inclusive Peer Collaboration
General education peers active as buddies, modeling movements, supporting eye-gaze framing, and facilitating social-musical connection.
Lesson Materials
Mouse hand puppet or plush toy
Fabric fragment or plastic needle
Switch programmed with "Squeak!"
Printable story cards & gaze board
Peer Support Roles
Pair general education students with AAC buddies. Peers act as visual anchors (holding cards), action mirrors (modeling rocking), and wait-time advocates .
Promotes social-emotional growth.
Adapted 8-Part Sequence
Feierabend Component Adaptive Translation Buddy / Peer Support Role 1. Pitch Exploration Yarn "squeaking" slides. Move hand puppet up/down. Peer mirrors puppet motions on student core board. 2. Fragment Singing Call & response with character cries (Squeak!). Peer models waiting and celebrates with a high-five. 5. Song Tale "The Tailor and the Mouse" with high-contrast visuals. Peer holds sequencing cards in buddy's gaze field. 7. Movement for Form Pat/clap/rock on "Hi diddle um kum tarum". Peer & buddy rock and hold hands/wrists to the beat.

Implementation Guide
Teaching Script & Delivery Guide
Step-by-step facilitation prompts and communicative opportunities
Step 1 • Gathering & Vocal Warm-Up (5 mins) Pitch Exploration
Teacher Script: "My friends, look who came to sewing class today! It's little mouse. When little mouse climbs up the mountain, her voice goes up! (Slide puppet high, sing high 'Squeeeeeak')."
Buddy Connection: Gen-ed peer models pointing to "UP" and "DOWN" on core board. The buddy eye-gazes or touches, and the peer buddy moves a paper mouse toy to that height.
Step 2 • The Song Tale Storytelling (15 mins) Expressive Listening
Teacher Script: "Once upon a time, a tailor lived in a little house. And who was there? A tiny mouse! (Sing verse 1). Every time we hear about the mouse, she goes: Squeak! Let's touch our buttons or boards!"
Buddy Connection: Gen-ed peer ensures physical switches are aligned in reach. Peer waits 5 seconds to advocate for processing space before celebrating buddy's "Squeak!" response with excitement.
Step 3 • Active Sequencing (10 mins) Interactive Response
Teacher Script: "Uh oh, the tailor is sewing! What is the mouse doing? Where did the mouse go? Did she run into the cupboard, or into the pocket?"
Buddy Connection: Peer holds up two sequencing cards (e.g., Bed vs Pill card) at buddy's eye level, tracking buddy's eye-gaze and declaring: "You chose Bed! Let's tell the teacher!"
Adaptive Music Assessment Rubric
Skill Area Emerging (1 pt) Assisted (2 pts) Independent (3 pts) Rhythmic Response Reacts to "Squeak!" with expression or shift in gaze. Activates squeak switch or vocalizes with hand model. Independently models "Squeak!" on beat with switch or voice. Gaze/Narrative Tracking Briefly attends to visual slide when vocal prompt is given. Tracks puppet motion and visual slides with verbal direction. Spontaneously shifts gaze to newly introduced visual elements. Buddy Collaboration Passively allows peer to place cards or hold hands. Co-creates musical choices with peer's modeling and prompt. Initiates communication with peer to direct song (e.g. pointing).

Active Mirroring Goal
The **Mirror Beat Game** utilizes joint-attention modeling where the AAC student directs the color choices, and the peer buddy acts as their direct rhythmic co-striker, creating a perfect musical "mirror image".
Game Phases & Facilitation Steps
Phase 1 • Setup & Color Calling
Teacher displays **Boomwhacker Color Cards** (Red, Yellow, Green). The non-verbal student selects a color using eye-gaze or pointing. The peer supporter picks up that matching physical tube and strikes a steady beat!
Phase 2 • Mirror Beat Imitation
The peer supporter taps a simple 2-beat pattern (e.g. *Tap-Tap-Rest*). The non-verbal buddy replicates the rest or models the pattern by blinking, nodding, or using their "Squeak" voice button on the rest beat.
Phase 3 • Peer-Scribed Composition
Using the **Mirror Rhythm Matrix** below, the non-verbal buddy points to colors to design a custom 4-beat song track. The peer supporter records the choices and plays the newly co-composed melody for the classroom!
The Mirror Rhythm Matrix (Write Color Letter C, E, G in Boxes)
Beat 1
Beat 2
Beat 3
Beat 4
Inclusive Mirror Tip: Ensure peer supporters hold the tubes in the student’s midline field of vision. High contrast between the colored tubes and the carpet helps non-verbal buddies track the hits with great precision.
