Skill of the Week: Focus 1
Self-Advocacy & Teacher Communication
Theme 1 of 4
Emailing Teachers
Use the 3-part format: Clear subject line, courteous greeting, and a specific question with the assignment name.
"Can I review Problem 4 during Thursday advisory?"
Asking For Help
Avoid saying "I don't get it." Pinpoint the exact step where you got stuck so teachers can help faster.
"I have the formula set up, but I'm unsure how to isolate X."
Tracking Supports
Track your accommodations (extra time, graphic organizers, quiet testing) and advocate proactively before due dates.
Request extra time 24 hours prior, not at test start.
This Week's Challenge Target:
Send 1 professional check-in email or ask 1 targeted clarifying question.
Skill of the Week: Focus 2
Organization & Materials Mastery
Theme 2 of 4
5-Min Backpack Cleanout
Empty loose papers every Friday. Recycle scrap, return borrowed supplies, and keep only current units in bag.
Goal: Zero loose or crumpled papers at bottom.
Folder Hierarchy
Maintain 2 designated pockets per subject: Left for "Active / In Progress", Right for "Completed / Ready to Turn In".
Label tab with subject & your name clearly.
Digital Drive Cleanup
Rename "Untitled Document" files immediately with Date_Class_Topic. Move files into subject folders.
Example: 10-14_Sci_LabReport3
This Week's Challenge Target:
File every loose paper into its proper folder before leaving class.
Skill of the Week: Focus 3
Time Management & Task Planning
Theme 3 of 4
Prioritize (1-2-3)
Tag your daily assignments: (1) Due tomorrow / High point value, (2) Ongoing project milestone, (3) Optional study/review.
Complete Priority 1 tasks first every afternoon.
Time Estimation
Write estimated minutes next to each entry (e.g., "Math: 20 min"). Compare with actual time to sharpen your pacing accuracy.
Prevents late-night panic by planning realistic time blocks.
Chunking Projects
Break large projects into 3 mini-deadlines: Step 1 (Research/Outline), Step 2 (Draft/Build), Step 3 (Polish/Proofread).
Write all mini-deadlines in your notebook right away.
This Week's Challenge Target:
Add an estimated time (e.g. 15m) next to each notebook entry today.
Skill of the Week: Focus 4
Study & Active Review Strategies
Theme 4 of 4
Flashcard Mastery
Use the Leitner 3-pile method: Pile 1 (Daily practice), Pile 2 (Every 3 days), Pile 3 (Mastered). Say answers aloud before flipping.
Active recall beats passive reading every time.
Summarizing Notes
Write a 20-word summary at the bottom of each page of notes. Highlight only 3 essential keywords per section.
"If you can't summarize it briefly, review it again."
Assessment Prep
Start studying 3 days before any quiz or test in 15-minute bursts instead of one long cram session the night before.
Day 1: Vocab / Day 2: Problems / Day 3: Self-Quiz
This Week's Challenge Target:
Create a 3-bullet summary for yesterday's class topic in your notes.
