Paraprofessional Operational Definitions & Decision Guide
I Independent
When to code "Independent":
- Responds to natural cues (bell ringing, teacher whole-group instruction).
- Initiates task within 3-5 seconds without individual adult prompt.
- Completes step or routine accurately on their own.
- Self-corrects without adult intervention.
Target Goal: Maintain independence & fade adult proximity.
MP Minimally Prompted
When to code "Minimal Prompt":
- Visual: Taps visual schedule, points to first step card.
- Gestural: Points to worksheet, motions toward seat.
- Indirect Verbal: "What is our routine now?" or "What's next on your desk?"
- One brief reminder is sufficient for student to complete the task.
Wait Rule: Give student 3-5 seconds to respond before adding prompts.
DH Direct Help
When to code "Direct Help":
- Direct Verbal: "Pick up your pencil and write problem #1."
- Model: Adult demonstrates the exact behavior first.
- Physical (Partial/Full): Hand-under-hand or guiding hand to start task.
- Staff completes a critical portion of the task for the student.
Fade Goal: Step down to minimal cue on the next opportunity.
Paraprofessional Data Fidelity Checklist
1. The 3-5 Second Rule: Always pause 3-5 seconds after a direction before delivering a prompt to allow natural processing.
2. Least-to-Most: Start with the least intrusive prompt (visual/gestural) before escalating to direct assistance.
3. Record Highest Needed: If multiple prompts are used in one trial, record the highest prompt level required for completion.
4. Objective Notes: Record observable facts (e.g., "turned head away", "refused after loud sound") rather than assumptions.
