Hugs are a special way to show care!
This story helps us learn when hugs are safe and gentle, and how to respect everyone's personal space bubble.
Chapter 1
My Big Feelings and Warm Wishes
Sometimes I feel happy, excited, or proud. When I see my friends, family, or teachers, I might feel a warm feeling inside and think, "I want to give a big hug!"
Feeling happy to see someone is wonderful and completely normal!
Chapter 2
Everyone Has a Personal Space Bubble
Every person has an imaginary bubble around their body. This bubble keeps them feeling comfortable, safe, and calm.
My body belongs to ME
Their body belongs to THEM
Chapter 3
Not Everyone Likes Hugs All the Time
Even when I want a hug, another person might not want one. They might be tired, busy, sensory-sensitive, or simply prefer their personal space.
Touching someone without asking can make them feel startled, upset, or scared.

Skill 1 • Asking Permission
Always Ask Before Hugging
Step-by-Step Guide
The Golden Rule
"May I please give you a hug?" 🗣️
Before entering anyone's space bubble, I stop my feet, look at their face, and ask with polite words.
1
🛑
Stop & Stand Back
Keep one arm's length away. Do not jump, run, or grab.
2
💬
Ask Clearly
Say: "Can I have a hug?" Use a calm, kind voice.
3
⏳
Wait for Answer
Keep hands to myself while they think and answer.
What "YES" Looks Like
- Says out loud: "Yes!" or "Sure!"
- Smiles and nods their head up and down.
- Opens their arms out to receive a hug.
➡️ Now I may give a safe, gentle hug!
What "NO" Looks Like
- Says: "No thank you," "Not now," or "Stop."
- Shakes head, steps back, or crosses arms.
- Stays silent or looks away (silence means NO).
➡️ I smile and say: "That is okay!"
💡
Hearing "No" is okay! It doesn't mean my friend doesn't like me. It just means they want their space right now. When I respect their answer, I am being a wonderful friend!

Giving a Safe, Gentle Hug
The 3 Rules
3s
Rule 1: Keep It Brief (The 3-Second Rule)
Short & Sweet
A good hug is quick. In my head, I count: "One... Two... Three... Let go!" Hugs should not last a long time. Letting go quickly keeps both of us feeling safe.
Rule 2: Gentle Arms Only (No Bear Hugs)
Soft Touch
I place my arms gently around their shoulders or upper back. I do NOT squeeze tight, hold their neck, tackle, push, or lift them off their feet.
Rule 3: Let Go When They Move Away
Notice Signals
If the person takes a step back, pulls their body away, or says "Okay, that's enough," I let go right away and take two steps back into my own space.
