Vowel Detectives Teacher Guide
Special Education Tier 2/3 Intervention
Vowel Detectives Teacher Guide
IEP Target: 80% Accuracy
30-Minute Small Group (3-5 Students)
Target Patterns: ai, ee, oa, igh
Long Vowels: /ā/, /ē/, /ō/, /ī/
Instructional Model: Orton-Gillingham / Science of Reading
Target Criterion: ≥ 8 of 10 Words (80%)
30-Minute Structured Pacing Framework
0–5 min
Phase 1: Phonemic Warm-Up & Detective Clue Reveal
Rapid phoneme isolation: audit /ā/, /ē/, /ō/, /ī/. Introduce vowel team clue cards. Review concept: "Two letters that make one vowel sound."
5–12 min
Phase 2: Explicit Orthographic Mapping (Tap, Map, Graph)
Model phoneme-grapheme alignment with Elkonin boxes: train (t-r-ai-n = 4 sounds), sheep (sh-ee-p = 3 sounds), boat (b-oa-t = 3 sounds), light (l-igh-t = 3 sounds).
12–20 min
Phase 3: Guided Contrast Sort & Word Building
Students complete guided fill-in and detective clue sort on Student Practice Page. Teach positioning cues: ai and oa live in base-word middles; igh is paired with 't'.
20–27 min
Phase 4: Independent Dictation & 10-Word IEP Probe
Administer standardized 10-word probe without visual aids. Student taps sounds and spells in dedicated probe boxes. Includes 1 sentence dictation.
27–30 min
Phase 5: Self-Monitoring, Error Analysis & Goal Graphing
Students self-check with green highlighter, count correct vowel teams, calculate percentage, and color their Progress Detective Badge (≥80% = Target Achieved).
Explicit Instructional Script & Routine
Teacher Talk (The 4-Step Sound Mapping Routine):
"Detectives, today we are tracking 4 special vowel teams that make long vowel sounds. Notice that two or three letters work as one team to make ONE sound!"
- Step 1 (Say & Tap): "Say paint. Finger tap: /p/ - /ā/ - /n/ - /t/. How many sounds? Four sounds!"
- Step 2 (Map): "Push one counter into each sound box for every sound you heard."
- Step 3 (Graph): "What makes the /ā/ sound in the middle of paint? The vowel team ai. Write ai together in one box!"
- Step 4 (Verify): "Sweep your finger under the letters and blend: /p/ - /ā/ - /n/ - /t/, paint!"
/ā/ = ai
Found in the middle of a base word (e.g., rain, sail, train). Never at the very end.
/ē/ = ee
Most common long-e team. Can be in the middle or at the end (e.g., keep, see).
/ō/ = oa
Found in the middle between consonants (e.g., boat, road, soap).
/ī/ = igh
Trigraph (3 letters, 1 sound). Almost always followed by t (e.g., night, light).

IEP Data Protocol & Diagnostic Guide
Form A (Baseline / Weekly)
Standardized 10-Word Dictation Protocol (Script for Teacher)
Say each target word clearly, read the sample sentence, and repeat the word once. Allow 15-20 seconds per item. Do not indicate phoneme counts or give visual clues during probe administration.
1. train ai (/ā/)
"The train moved along the track. train"
2. sleep ee (/ē/)
"I like to sleep for eight hours. sleep"
3. boat oa (/ō/)
"The sailboat rocked gently. boat"
4. light igh (/ī/)
"Turn on the yellow desk light. light"
5. sail ai (/ā/)
"We watch the white sail flap. sail"
6. keep ee (/ē/)
"Please keep your notebook safe. keep"
7. toast oa (/ō/)
"I eat warm toast with butter. toast"
8. night igh (/ī/)
"Stars glow bright at night. night"
9. paint ai (/ā/)
"Use green paint on the tree. paint"
10. cloak oa (/ō/)
"The detective wore a dark cloak. cloak"
Sentence Dictation (Application Check): "The bright light on the boat shone in the night." (Target patterns embedded: bright [igh], light [igh], boat [oa], night [igh]).
Qualitative Error Analysis & Clinical Remediation
| Observed Spelling Error |
Root Phonological / Orthographic Cause |
Targeted Corrective Action |
| Vowel Omission |
|
|
| (e.g., "trn" for train) |
Phonemic awareness deficit; student glides over vowel nucleus straight to coda. |
Isolate medial vowel sound using tactile elkonin box tap before recording letters. |
| Magic-e Substitution |
|
|
| (e.g., "trane" or "bote") |
Overgeneralizing VCe pattern; student knows it is long but selects incorrect spelling pattern. |
Contrast sorting: Sort words into "VCe Team" vs "Vowel Team Detectives" columns. |
| Phonetic Simplification |
|
|
| (e.g., "nite" for night) |
Student represents /ī/ with basic pattern and ignores historical trigraph. |
Explicit rule drill: "When you hear /īt/ at the end, reach for 3-letter igh!" |
IEP Accommodations & Supports
- Kinesthetic: Finger-tap desk per phoneme before writing.
- Visual: Target vowel team anchor strips taped to desk.
- Pacing: Allow 5 extra seconds processing time between items.
- Motor: Provide pencil grips or raised-line answer boxes.
