Multisensory Foundations: How to Guide at Home
1. Finger Tapping (For Blends): For blends like cl-a-sp, every individual sound gets a tap! Touch non-writing thumb to index finger for /k/, thumb to middle for /l/, thumb to ring for /ă/, etc. Blends share space but have separate sounds.
2. "Watch for E, I, and Y" (Soft Rule): Teach the signal vowels! When letter C or G stands right in front of e, i, or y, it softens: c → /s/ (cent, city) and g → /j/ (gem, giant).

The Orton-Gillingham "Positive Correction" Protocol
When your child misreads a word (e.g., reads stage as stag): Never just say "No". Say: "Look right after the letter G. What letter do you see? (Child: 'e'). What does the signal letter 'e' tell the G to say? (Child: '/j/'). Now tap and sweep the whole word!"

Daily 5-Step OG Home Lesson
Target Duration: 15–20 Mins
1 Step 1: Visual & Auditory Warm-Up (3 Minutes) Flash Review
Parent shows card / writes letter: "Look at this card. What letter? What sound?"
Child answers: "Letters C-L, sound /kl/!" or "Letter C followed by E, sound /s/!"
Auditory Drill: Parent says: "The sound is /spl/. Repeat the sound and name the letters that make it." Child repeats: "/spl/... s - p - l."
2 Step 2: Blending Board / Tap & Sweep (4 Minutes) Blending
Parent points across word cards: Place letters: B - L - E - N - D.
Parent script: "Get your tapping fingers ready! Tap each sound from left to right, then sweep your hand under to read it."
Child performs: Taps: "/b/ ... /l/ ... /ĕ/ ... /n/ ... /d/ → [sweeps finger] BLEND!"
*Notice that blends have separate taps, while digraphs (like sh, th) only get one tap!
3 Step 3: New Concept & Rule Anchor (4 Minutes) Direct Instruction
Parent script: "You are already an expert with consonant blends. Today we unlock a secret code! Look at the letter C. Usually it says /k/ like in cat. But when C is right next to E, I, or Y, it whispers: /s/! Like in cent, city, and fancy."
Child says the rule chant: "C says /s/ and G says /j/ before E, I, and Y!" (Have child trace letters in air or on table).
4 Step 4: Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping & Spelling (4 Minutes) Pencil Work
Parent dictates: "Your word is prince. Say prince." (Child: "Prince").
Parent script: "Pencils down. Tap the sounds first!" Child taps: /p/ - /r/ - /ĭ/ - /n/ - /s/ (5 sounds).
Parent script: "Now write one sound per box. Remember how /s/ is spelled at the end after an n!"
Child writes: p r i n ce and reads back immediately with fingertip touch.
5 Step 5: Decodable Fluency & Passage Sprint (5 Minutes) Automaticity
Read 1 (Decoding Focus): Child reads passage with finger tracker. Encourage child to tap any unfamiliar blend or soft c/g word.
Read 2 (Smoothness & Scooping): Parent models scooping phrases (e.g., [The brave prince] [stepped on the stage]).
Read 3 (Celebration Read): Read with actor's voice! Child colors their fluency star on the practice sheet.
Mom's Secret Superpower: Processing Time
Tier 3 students need 3 to 5 seconds of silent processing before sounding out. Wait patiently before prompting!
