Primary Learning Objectives
1. Deconstruct: Learners will identify multi-step tasks and dismantle them into 3 to 5 discrete micro-actions (T-minus stages).2. Self-Monitor: Learners will advance countdown tokens sequentially to sustain task momentum and visually observe progress.3. Self-Advocate: Learners will activate the "Ground Control SOS" protocol when experiencing task freeze rather than shutting down.
Essential Launch Equipment
Launchpad Activity 1 printed board per learner (laminated recommended for dry-erase).
Countdown Tokens 5 numbered mission tokens (T-5 to T-1) with tactile backing/clips.
SOS Distress Signal Desk beacon card with 3 scripted self-advocacy communication prompts.
1 Phase 1: Mission Briefing — Normalizing Task Freeze (8 Mins)
Hook & Metacognition
Introduce the concept of "Engine Stall" (Task Freeze) . Explain that when a rocket faces a huge journey, astronauts never think about the entire solar system all at once; doing so overloads the navigation computer. In the human brain, seeing a huge assignment triggers the freeze response.
Teacher Script: "Astronauts, if I say 'Write an entire three-page report right now,' your brain computer might flash a red warning light and freeze. That's not your fault! Today we are learning how NASA flight controllers break giant missions into countdown clicks: T-minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and Blastoff!"
2 Phase 2: Flight Simulation — Dismantling Protocol (12 Mins)
Direct Instruction
Project Slide Deck. Model taking a standard classroom monster-task (e.g., "Complete Math Page 42, 6 word problems" ) and dismantling it using the 3-Step Telemetry Rule :
Step A: Name the Giant Identify the full target without panicking.
Step B: Micro-Action 1 Find the 30-second ignition action (e.g., open book, write name).
Step C: Trajectory Map Assign T-5 down to T-1 for the remaining chunks.

3 Phase 3: Launchpad Flight Run — Guided Trajectory (15 Mins)
Active Practice
Distribute the Launchpad Countdown Activity and Token sets. Have students select an authentic current classroom task or use the provided Mission Card. Learners write each micro-step in the trajectory bays, attach Token T-5 to the Launchpad, and only begin work on Step 1.
Tactile Rule: The learner physically moves the countdown token into the "Thruster Burned" dock only after each micro-step is finished. This tactile release floods dopamine and defeats task inertia.
4 Phase 4: Ground Control SOS Beacon — Self-Advocacy (5 Mins)
Distress Protocol
Exceptional learners frequently mask freeze with avoidance, behavioral escalation, or silent disengagement. Teach explicit distress codes using the SOS Beacon desk card:

5 Phase 5: Orbit Debrief & Sensor Reset (5 Mins)

Administer the Mission Debrief Cool Down . Learners rate their cognitive flight turbulence, celebrate burned tokens, and identify their personal "Ignition Spark" for tomorrow.
Executive Functioning Accommodation Matrix
Learner Profile Target Challenge Mission Scaffolding Modification ADHD / Working Memory Loses place mid-task; steps evaporate from memory. Cover upcoming steps with an index card ("shutter window") so only the active T-minus step is visible. Autism / Sensory Overload Overwhelmed by visual density or verbal directions. Use visual icon stickers instead of handwritten step descriptions; provide noise-dampening headset at launch. Dysgraphia / Slow Motor Writing out the steps creates a secondary freeze barrier. Teacher scribes the 3 steps, or student uses pre-printed Velcro micro-action tiles (Read, Underline, Solve, Check). Severe Task Freeze / Inertia Unable to initiate even Step 1 (complete paralysis). Implement "Two-Minute Ignition Buddy": Teacher does 50% of Step 1 co-operatively, then steps away once kinetic motion begins.
