Sound Bridge Parent Guide
A quick, zero-prep multisensory routine to build automaticity with consonant blends and bridge smoothly into soft C and soft G.

3-Letter Blends
Focus on str, scr, spl, spr. Tap each individual sound box.
Day 2
Ending Blends
Focus on -mp, -st, -nd, -pt. Read passage & check rate.
Day 3
Soft C Discovery
Learn why C whispers /s/ before e, i, y (cent, city).
Day 4
Soft G Discovery
Learn why G whispers /j/ before e, i, y (gem, giant).
The Orton-Gillingham Finger Tapping Method
In 4th grade intervention, students often omit consonants in blends (e.g., spelling strap as sap or trap). Do not say the letters—tap the individual phonemes (sounds):
1. Pound the Word Say the whole word together and gently pound a closed fist on the table (e.g., "SPLIT!").
2. Tap Each Sound Non-dominant hand: tap thumb to index (/s/), thumb to middle (/p/), ring (/l/), pinky (/i/), index (/t/).
3. Map & Write One box for each sound. Note: Blends get separate boxes because both consonants make sounds!
Golden Script: How to Correct an Error Without Stress
If he reads "clasp" as "clap":
"Good eyes! You caught the /c/ and /l/. Let's tap the ending sounds. Put your finger right here: what does this 's' say? (/s/). And 'p'? (/p/). Now slide them together: /sp/. Read the whole word!"

1 Part 1: The Visual & Auditory Drill (3 Minutes)
Hold up the drill cards from the card pack.
Mom says: "Look at this blend. What sounds do these letters make together?"
Student responds: "s-t-r says /str/ as in string."
2 Part 2: Tap-It, Map-It, Spell-It Script (5 Minutes)
Mom says: "The word is CRISP. Repeat the word." → Student says: "Crisp."
Mom: "Pound the word and tap the sounds." → Student taps: /k/ /r/ /i/ /s/ /p/ (5 sounds).
Mom: "How many sounds did you hear?" → Student: "Five."
Mom: "Now write each letter in its sound box and read it back to me."
3 Part 3: The "Gentle Whisper" Rule (Soft C & Soft G)
Use this script to introduce the bridge concept on Days 3 & 4:
Mom: "Usually, C says /k/ like cat, and G says /g/ like game. BUT when C or G is right next to the three gentle letters—E, I, or Y—they get soft and whisper! C whispers /s/ like in cent, city, and cycle. G whispers /j/ like in gem, giant, and gym!"

- Contrast with Hard C: camp, crop, clump
Soft G Rule (/j/) Before e, i, y
- • ge: gem, stage, cage, page
- • gi: giant, ginger, magic, digit
- • gy: gym, gymnastics
- Contrast with Hard G: glad, grab, grump
