Instructional Pacing & Script
1
Warm-Up: The Silly Routine (5 Mins)
Start by saying: "Class, this morning I put my shoes on FIRST, and then I put my socks on LAST over my shoes! Is that right?" Pause for laughter. Explain that order matters so that routines work correctly.
2
Interactive Slide Deck (15 Mins)
Project the Routine Builders Slides . Go through handwashing, coat dressing, and cereal preparation. Emphasize physical modeling (e.g., wash your hands in the air, mime pulling on sleeves) as you repeat the terms: First... Then... Last!
3
Guided Worksheet Practice (15 Mins)
Distribute Routine Builders Worksheet . Start with Page 1 (Cut & Glue). Support fine motor skills or complete cutouts beforehand for students needing accommodation. Proceed to Page 2 (Color Code) and Page 3 (Write/Draw).
Common Misconceptions & Pitfalls
Reversing "Then" and "Last": Students often grasp "First" easily but swap the final two steps. Anchor "Last" as "The very end / All done."
Visual Tracking Errors: Students may try to order steps vertically instead of left-to-right. Use finger-pointing and sweep motions to model reading direction.
Color-Key Confusion: On Page 2, students might color circles their favorite color instead of matching the keys. Guide them to check the key first for every circle.
