Pacing Play Lesson Plan PACING & TOKEN PLAY PLAN
Lesson 1: Star Power & Turtle Speed Instructional Guide
Target: Age 5 • ADHD / Neurodivergent
Core Learning Objectives
Child selects a preferred reward card before starting work.
Child accepts "First [Task], Then [Star]" routine without protest.
Child uses "Turtle Speed" finger pacing to pause and check 1 task.
Materials & Sensory Prep
Laminated Star Power Board & Velcro tokens.
Turtle Speed Desk Pacing Mat.
Two simple puppets (or animal figurines: Turtle & Cheetah).
4-Step Interactive Play Sequence (15–20 Mins)
1 Puppet Theater: "Dash Cheetah vs Toby Turtle" (5 mins) Concept Introduction
Adult Script: "Look at Dash the Cheetah! Zoom zoom zoom! Dash scribbles in 1 second, rips the paper, and drops his pencil. Uh oh, Dash feels frustrated! Now look at Toby Turtle. Toby points his finger: one... two... slow and steady. Toby takes a belly breath. Look! Toby earned a shiny STAR!"
2 Movement Game: "Turtle Slow-Mo Challenge" (5 mins) Kinesthetic Regulation
Stand together. Say: "Show me Cheetah speed!" (fast marching in place for 5 seconds). Call out: "TURTLE POWER!" Everyone freezes and transitions into ultra slow-motion walking. Praise body control: "Look at those calm, controlled muscles! You controlled your speed!"
3 Hands-On Guided Practice: The 3-Star Quick Win (5 mins) Direct Practice
Present the 3-Star Board. Let the child pick a high-preference reinforcer (e.g., bubbles or sensory car). Use a micro-task (e.g., tracing 3 circles or sorting 3 blocks). Before each block, prompt: "Touch the Turtle track: Look, Breathe, Place." Award star immediately upon calm completion of each item with enthusiastic high praise.
4 Reward Cash-In & Reset Routine (3 mins) Reinforcement Delivery
When the 3rd star clicks on: "STAR POWER UNLOCKED! You worked with calm hands and turtle pacing!" Give immediate 2-minute access to the chosen item. Set a visual sand timer so the child knows when the break wraps up comfortably.
Adult Scripting Cheat Sheet (Use Exactly These Words)
Starting Task: "First 3 blocks, then bubbles! You pick your star power!"
When Rushing: "Tap-tap turtle! Let's touch step 2 and take a big turtle breath together."

Classroom, Home & Therapy Alignment Protocol
Caregiver Alignment
Cross-Setting Application Matrix
Classroom Desk
• Tape Turtle Pacing Mat directly to child's primary seat.
• Break worksheets into strips of 2-3 problems only.
• Nonverbal prompt: Tap the turtle card instead of verbal warnings.
Reinforcer: 2-min sensory swing or class helper job.
Home Routine
• Keep 3-Star Board on refrigerator for high-friction routines.
• Example: Star 1 (Shoes on), Star 2 (Jacket on), Star 3 (Backpack on).
• Same Turtle Breath cue when rushing through teeth brushing.
Reinforcer: 5-min bedtime story or dance song.
OT / Therapy
• Pair token delivery with fine-motor endurance tasks (cutting, pegboard).
• Use tactile cue (velcro resistance) to anchor finger pacing.
• Pre-rate arousal: Check if child is "Cheetah" before starting.
Reinforcer: Heavy work obstacle course or crash pad.
Common ADHD Roadblocks & Responsive Solutions
Issue 1:
Child demands token immediately or snatches it before working:
Keep token in adult's palm or hidden behind the board. Say neutrally: "Hands on desk, complete 1 card, then star lands!" Deliver token within 1 second of task completion.
Issue 2:
Child rushes aggressively, making sloppy errors to finish fast:
Do not scold. Point to the Pacing Mat: "That was Cheetah Speed! Cheetahs don't get the star yet. Let's touch step 4 to check together." Guide hand gently to trace.
Issue 3:
Child swipes or throws the token board during frustration:
Hold neutral face, block hits calmly (see Lesson 2). Say: "Body is hot. Board is resting. Let's take 3 turtle breaths." Do NOT remove previously earned stars; tokens are irrevocable once earned.

Lesson 2: Redirection Role-Play, Puppet Scripts & Safe Fidget Drills
Active Role-Play
The ADHD Hitting Instinct: At age 5, hitting during redirection is rarely malicious; it is an impulsive fight-or-flight motor surge triggered by sudden task switches. Our goal is motor replacement —giving the hands an immediate, intense physical alternative before anger peaks.
3 Low-Pressure Practice Routines (Practice During Calm Times!)
1 Puppet Drama: "Barnaby Bear Gets Redirected" (5 mins) Puppet Modeling
Adult holds Barnaby Bear building blocks. Second puppet (Teacher Owl) says: "Time to clean up for lunch!" Barnaby roars, raises paws to hit Owl. Adult freezes Barnaby: "Wait! Barnaby's brain remembers CALM HANDS!" Barnaby drops paws flat onto carpet and pushes with all his might for 3 seconds: "Puuuush! Hooo-ahhh (deep exhale)!" Owl praises: "Thank you for safe hands, Barnaby! Here is your star!" Ask child: "Can you show Barnaby how you push the floor?"
2 Movement Game: "Freeze & Squeeze Redirection Dance" (5 mins) Impulse Control
Play high-energy music. When music stops, do NOT just say freeze—hold up one of the Visual Replacement Cards! If you flash "Squeeze Lemons," child clasps both hands and squeezes tight until you say "Juice is out!" If you flash "Wall Push," child dashes to the wall and pushes flat. Award a token for every rapid, safe motor switch.
3 Fidget Driving School: "Park Your Fidget" (3 mins) Tool Practice
Give child their favorite squish ball or pop-it. Practice: "Drive on the road" (child squishes while adult reads 1 sentence of a story). Call out: "Red Light! Park your car!" Child immediately places the fidget in the designated Fidget Parking Lot square on their desk mat and rests hands on lap. Deliver immediate star token for parking on the first prompt.
Avoid Saying (Escalates Fight/Flight):
× "Don't you hit me! That is bad!"
× "Why did you do that? Look at me!"
× "You just lost your prize for the day!"
What to Say (Calms Motor Surge):
✓ "Hands push the floor. Push with me."
✓ "Body is surprised. Big breath in."
✓ "Squeeze lemon 1-2-3... relax."

Classroom, Home & Therapy Unified Intervention Protocol
Child: ____________________ Age: 5 • Diagnostic Profile: ADHD
Behaviors Targeted for Reduction:
1. Physical Aggression: Hitting, swatting, or shoving adults/peers during unexpected redirection, task demands, or transition away from preferred items.
2. Rushing / Task Swiping: Frantic scribbling (<3 sec) or clearing materials off desk without attempting steps.
Function & Desired Replacement:
Function: Escape from overwhelming sensory/cognitive demand & impulsivity.
Replacement: Handing "Break" card, handing "Task Box" card, using Turtle finger pacing, and utilizing Wall/Floor Push replacement motor actions.
1. Prevention
• First-Then Structure: Always pair high-interest reward card on token board prior to presenting task.
• Chunking: Present only 1 task box at a time on the mat. Hide extra materials.
• Visual Countdown: 2-minute visual sand timer warning before ending preferred play.
• Desk Cueing: Silent point to Turtle Card instead of verbal corrections.
Goal: Stop frustration before motor surge.
2. Replacement
• Functional Break Exchange: Child hands or taps "Break" card → Immediate 2-min calm reset honored 100% of time during initial teaching.
• Motor Substitution: When fists clench, prompt "Squeeze Lemons" or "Wall Push".
• Fidget as Tool: One approved quiet sensory tool kept in hand or on Parking Lot mat.
Goal: Communicate need without striking.
3. Team Response
• Neutral Affect: No angry facial expressions, scolding, or long explanations.
• Side Block: Maintain 45-degree angle. Use cushion/clipboard to absorb strikes. Never hold wrists.
• Irrevocable Tokens: Never take away earned stars. Deliver token on 1st calm replacement step.
Goal: Keep everyone safe & de-escalate fast.
