Rocket R Lesson Plan
Speech-Language Pathology Articulation & Motor Speech
Rocket R: Prevocalic /r/ Lesson Plan
Target Level: Word Practice • Context: Prevocalic / Initial /r/
/r/
Client / Student: _____________________
Date & Time: ____ / ____ / 2026
Duration: 30–45 Minutes
Therapist / Clinician: _____________________
Measurable Clinical Objectives
Primary Articulation Goal
Student will produce prevocalic /r/ in initial position of single words (e.g., rabbit, rainbow, red) with ≥80% accuracy across 30+ trials given minimal visual or verbal cues.
Auditory Discrimination Goal
Student will perceptually distinguish between initial /r/ and /w/ minimal pairs with 90% accuracy across 10 auditory presentations without visual prompts.
Phonetic Placement & Biomechanical Strategies
Technique A: Bunched /r/ High Success
- Tongue body retracts back and elevates toward soft palate.
- Lateral tongue margins firmly brace against upper molars.
- Tongue tip rests low or mid, not touching the alveolar ridge.
- Slight central depression ("tongue bowl") allows airflow.
Technique B: Retroflexed /r/ Alternative
- Tongue tip elevates and curls gently backward behind alveolar ridge.
- Tip must never touch the hard palate (prevents /d/ distortion).
- Sides of tongue maintain contact with upper lateral teeth.
- Back of tongue stays anchored low and stable.
Key Cue to Prevent /w/ Substitution ("Rabbit" → "Wabbit"): Instruct student to smile gently or maintain "square lips" rather than rounded lips. Lateral tongue tension must trigger before the vocal cord phonation starts.
Instructional Procedure (Phases 1 & 2)
1
Auditory Discrimination & Ear Training
5–7 Minutes
Present minimal pairs auditorily (ring / wing, red / wed, rock / walk). Student gives "Thumbs Up" for /r/ ("Growling Bear") and "Thumbs Down" for /w/ ("Wind Sound"). Reinforce acoustic difference before motor attempts.
2
Biomechanical Elicitation & Coarticulation Shaping
8–10 Minutes
Shape from high-back /k/ or /g/ ("Kar... → Rrr") to anchor tongue sides against upper molars. Alternatively, shape from long /i/ ("Eee-rrr") to ensure tongue height. Use tactile mirror for lip check (smile vs. kiss) and biofeedback.
Required Materials & Clinical Biofeedback Tools
Handheld mirror
Picture flashcards
Token tracker chips
Dental tactile cue / stick

Phase 3 & 4: Practice & Assessment
Prevocalic /r/ Word Drill & Data Tracker
Target Frequency: 50+ Total Productions
Systematic Coarticulation Stimulus Words
Grouped by following vowel context for optimal coarticulation

Rainbow /reɪnboʊ/
Red /rɛd/
Race /reɪs/
Ramp /ræmp/
High Vowels (/i/, /ɪ/, /u/) Tier 2
Read /rid/
Ring /rɪŋ/
Ribbon /rɪbən/
Room /rum/

Robot /roʊbɑt/
Rope /roʊp/
Rug /rʌɡ/
Rock /rɑk/
Drill Game: The 50-Word Rocket Blastoff
10 Trials per Block
Student practices target words in sets of 10. For each successful crisp /r/, shade one fuel cell. Once all 5 fuel blocks are energized, launch the rocket token!
Block 1: /ræ/ Words
Block 2: /reɪ/ Words
Block 3: /rɛ/ Words
Block 4: Mixed Vowels
Block 5: Fast Challenge
Session Data Collection (10 Probe Words)
Record: + (Correct), - (Substitution/Distortion), or Cue Level

Error Pattern Breakdown
/w/ substitution (Lip rounding present)
Lack of lateral tongue bracing
Tongue tip touching palate (/d/ intrusion)
Vowel distortion (/ʊ/ or /ə/ colored)
Home Carryover Prescription
Daily 5-Minute "Mirror Check": Practice 10 reps each of rabbit, rainbow, and red in front of a bathroom mirror. Remind client to "freeze the lips in a smile" before launching the sound.
