WIN Champions Activity Bank
Grade 2 WIN Toolkit Targeted Engagement & Classroom Flow
Observation Action Plan
WIN Champions Activity Bank
Streamlined, self-directed routines designed to maintain 100% classroom engagement while running 1-on-1 intervention conferences.
Observation Shift: Moving from 6 fragmented, loose tasks (subtraction, candy math, computers, coloring, spelling, pumpkin story) to a crystal-clear Must-Do / May-Do 2-Phase Structure with built-in self-checking mechanisms to stop wandering and off-task drift.
1 Math Fact & Computation Missions (Replaces Loose Math Sheets)
High Structure • Self-Paced
Dice Roll Subtraction War
Students roll two 10-sided dice, generate a 2-digit number, subtract 10 or 15, and record work on laminated grid mats.
Accountability: 6 Equations Recorded
Self-Check Math Clip Cards
Task cards stored in labeled bins. Students clip a clothespin onto the answer, then flip over to reveal a hidden green dot to verify.
Accountability: 10 Cards Completed
100-Chart Mystery Riddles
Solve mental math clues (e.g., "10 more than 43, minus 2") using dry-erase markers directly on tabletop hundred charts.
Accountability: Secret Code Solved
2 Phonics & Word Work Quests (Replaces Passive Spelling Lists)
Tactile • Silent Flow
Pocket Chart Phonics Sort
Sort word cards by vowel team or syllable patterns into tabletop pocket charts, then write the sorted list in sound boxes.
Accountability: 3 Columns in Word Log
Sight Word Spy Decoder
Use magnifying lenses or red filters to find high-frequency target words hidden inside short decodable seasonal sentences.
Accountability: 5 Decoder Checks
Sand Tray & Letter Tiles
Build sight and spelling words using magnetic tiles, trace them in a mess-free silicone sand tray, and stamp into their WIN folder.
Accountability: 8 Words Built & Read
The 2nd Grade "Anchor Rule": Every student keeps their assigned folder open flat on the upper-left corner of their desk. Even during hands-on activities, the open tracker confirms they are on task without requiring teacher intervention.

WIN Routine Architecture
Reading Studio, May-Do & Independent Flow
Preventing Student Wandering
3 Reading Response Studio (Structured "Story & Comprehension")
Focus Over Idle Coloring
Story Map Comic Strip
Students read an independent book (or the seasonal pumpkin tale) and illustrate 3 sequential panels: Beginning, Problem, and Solution.
Format: 3-Box Graphic Sheet
Whisper Phone Read-Aloud
Using PVC pipe whisper phones, students read decodable passages to themselves at a level-0 volume, monitoring their own phrasing and pacing.
Format: 1 Laminated Passage
Character Chat Cards
Pick one question card from the ring (e.g., "Would you be friends with this character? Why?") and write a 2-sentence response.
Format: Sticky Note in Book
4 Purposeful May-Do Menu (When "Must-Dos" Are Inspected)
Quiet • High Engagement
Curated Computer Station
Restricted to single bookmarked program (e.g., Epic). Headphones on, volume checked, sitting with feet under desk.
Rule: 15-Minute Timer Displayed
Silent STEM Brick Challenge
Use a personal bin of 20 base-ten or interlocking blocks to build the challenge of the day (e.g., "Build a bridge 8 units tall").
Rule: Built Flat On Table Felt
Math Color-By-Code
Replaces free coloring. Every numbered section requires solving a 2-digit addition or subtraction equation before adding color.
Rule: Work Must Show in Box
The "3 Before Me" Protocol: Protecting 1-on-1 Intervention
Solves Teacher Tapping & Wandering
When the teacher is conducting a 1-on-1 session, a small red desk cone or table light is illuminated. Students are not permitted to walk up to the teacher. Instead, they must follow this 3-step sequence:
1
Re-Read Visual Board
Check the board visual step list & picture icons.
2
Ask a Table Neighbor
Level-1 whisper: "Can you show me where we are?"
3
Flip the Help Cup
Turn red cup up, keep working on May-Do until scan.

Teacher Facilitation & Routines
The "Freeze & Scan" Management System
Building on Observer Praise
The 30-Second "Scan & Reset" Routine (Every 6–8 Minutes)
The informal observation highlighted that when you gave the whole-class cue “Everyone please freeze”, classroom calm immediately improved. Turn that reactive reset into a predictable, scheduled rhythm:
Step 1: Chime / Freeze
Ring a soft chime between 1-on-1 conferences. Cue: "Freeze in 3, 2, 1." All hands on heads; walking feet stop instantly.
Step 2: 10-Second Scan
Stand tall, make eye contact across all tables. Verbally narrate on-task models: "Table 3 has their math logs open and pencils moving."
Step 3: Silent Release
Give a thumbs up: "Thank you for showing focus. Return to your mission." Transition smoothly to the next 1-on-1 student.
Tabletop Supply Caddies
Eliminate wandering to supply stations. Pre-load center table caddies with 4 pencils, 2 erasers, 4 clipboards, and dry-erase markers before 9:45 AM.
One-Way Walking Footpaths
Tape perimeter arrows on floor carpet tiles. If a student is called for 1-on-1 support, they use the outer loop with "walking feet" silently.
