SKILL 1
The Launch Sequence: Starting Independently
Step 1: Decode Prompt
Circle action verbs (e.g., explain, calculate, compare) and underline the required response format.
Step 2: Clear & Stage
Place only the necessary supplies on your desk. Put away phones, extra tabs, and unrelated books immediately.
Step 3: Two-Minute Sprint
Write the first sentence or solve problem #1 within 120 seconds. Action builds confidence and momentum.
Scenario Analysis: The Starting Line Stall CASE ID: 6B-LEO
"The teacher writes 'Read pages 45–48 and complete questions 1–3 in your notebook' on the board. Leo looks at the board, organizes his pencil case for four minutes, checks the clock, taps his desk, and waits for the teacher to walk by so he can ask: 'Wait, what are we supposed to do?'"
1. What two specific roadblocks stopped Leo from launching independently?
2. Rewrite Leo's first 90 seconds using the 3-Step Launch Sequence:

1. Reread Directions Whisper the prompt quietly.
2. Check Your Anchor Look at board models or notes.
3. Skip & Circle Work ahead; return later.
Scenario Challenge: Mid-Work Course Correction
"You are 12 minutes into a 25-minute independent task. You finish problem 3, but problem 4 looks impossible. Two students nearby start quietly chatting about video games."
