Reading Passage: The Shadowed Bridge
Lexile ~650L
Marcus bolted down the porch stairs, his worn sneakers splashing through fresh puddles. The chilly autumn breeze made his breath visible, yet beads of sweat rolled down his temples. Clutching a wrinkled brown envelope tightly against his ribs, he cast three nervous glances back toward the empty driveway. When a distant police siren wailed through the valley, Marcus froze instantly in place. He jammed the envelope deep into his heavy winter coat lining, pulled his hood tight over his forehead, and slipped quietly beneath the dark wooden beams of the covered bridge.
