1. The 4 Key Compensatory Speech Strategies
Target: Memorize and describe at least 3
1
Paced Rate (Turtle Speed)
Slow down your syllables
Slowing your speech gives your articulators time to reach each sound accurately and gives listeners time to process.
Visual Cue: Picture a steady metronome or speed bump.
2
Crisp Overarticulation
Exaggerate final sounds
Open your mouth wider and make consonant endings (t, d, k, p, s) crisp and clear instead of dropping word endings.
Visual Cue: Punch out every final consonant sound.
3
Projected Volume
Use supported breath
Speak with an intentional, confident volume. Strong breath support increases vocal fold closure and speech clarity.
Visual Cue: Direct your voice across the room, not down.
4
Strategic Pausing (Chunking)
Group words into breath units
Pause every 3-5 words at natural phrase boundaries. Take a quick catch-breath before continuing your thought.
Visual Cue: Slash marks [ // ] between thought groups.
2. Sentence-Level Strategy Drills
Read aloud using the noted strategy cue

Paced Rate
"To • day • I • will • fo • cus • on • ta • king • my • time • when • I • speak."

Crisp Endings

3. Asking Appropriate Questions During Conversation
Listen → Connect → Inquire
Step 1: Active Listen Notice partner's topic & emotion
Step 2: Add a Bridge "That sounds interesting..."
Step 3: Ask Open Question Invite more than a yes/no response
Familiar Partners (Friends, Family)
- "How did your project end up turning out?"
- "What was the most challenging part of that?"
- "What are your plans for dinner tonight?"
Unfamiliar Partners (Staff, Peers, Public)
- "Could you tell me where I can find...?"
- "What do you recommend on this menu?"
- "How long have you been working here?"

4. Self-Monitoring & Intelligibility Breakdown Routine
Catch it → Reset → Repair
A Notice Listener Cues
Watch for non-verbal cues (tilted head, furrowed brow, leaning in) or verbal cues ("Huh?", "Can you repeat that?").
Signal: Communication Breakdown detected!
B Pause & Select Strategy
Do not just repeat faster! Stop, take an inhale, and decide which compensatory tool will fix the message.
Pick: Rate • Volume • Overarticulation • Chunk
C Use a Repair Script
Begin your repair smoothly: "Let me say that again more clearly..."
Re-deliver with exaggerated clarity!
5. Structured Conversation Scenarios (Role-Play & Real World)
Practice with familiar & unfamiliar partners
Task A: Familiar Partner (Friend / Peer) Goal: 2+ Questions
Prompt: Tell your partner about a movie, show, game, or hobby you enjoy. Use chunking and slow pace.
Required Question 1: "Have you ever seen/tried that before?"
Required Question 2: "What kind of shows/games do you prefer?"
Task B: Unfamiliar Partner (Store Staff / Guest) Goal: High Intelligibility
Prompt: Simulate ordering lunch at a counter or asking a store employee where an item is located.
Required Question 1: "Excuse me, which aisle has bottled water?"
Required Question 2: "Does this combo come with a beverage?"
6. Student Strategy Identification & Self-Monitoring Log
