An Adventure Survival Story
Leo paused on the steep rocky trail and looked up at the grey sky. 14
The icy mountain wind whipped past his jacket, warning him of the coming 27
blizzard. Deep in the thick pines, a sudden silence fell that felt completely 40
unnatural. Not a single bird called, and no squirrels scampered across the 52
frozen forest floor. Leo knew he was far off the main trail and unable 66
to reach the base camp before nightfall. Panic fluttered in his chest, but 79
he forced his mind to stay calm. He needed shelter immediately. Near a 92
high granite boulder, he spotted an overhanging rock that could block the freezing 105
winds. Working quickly with numb fingers, he gathered fallen pine boughs and dry 118
branches to build a strong windbreak. As heavy snow began to tumble from 131
the clouds, Leo struck his spark tool against the flint stone. A tiny 144
orange glow caught the dry birch bark. With careful breaths, he coaxed the 157
spark into a warm, crackling flame. An unexpected sense of relief and quiet 170
strength washed over him. The wilderness was fierce, but he was ready to survive. 184

"When I say go, everyone read aloud for one minute. Go!" (1 min later) "Stop! Circle and count your last word. Mark it on your paper for cold read." (Repeat for hot)
